When you or your loved one is struggling with alcohol, the thing you may want most is for the pain and the disappointment to stop. But, recovery in the past has often involved many cycles of relapse/treatment/relapse. Now, a new and more effective approach to alcoholism is available: The ReNova Method. A recently published 5 year outcome study has shown that ReNova is 250% more effective than 12-step approaches at keeping people in recovery. And ReNova is far less time-consuming, leaving room for the things that are important to you beyond recovery.

"Why can't i stop drinking or using drugs? It is causing so many problems, yet i continue to use! I am obsessed with when i will get my next drink/drug and it seems that it has become about the most important part of my day!" If this sounds familiar, then you may be "normal." Many who drink or use drugs have crossed a line somewhere and lost the choice to quit. I work with clients who are desperately trying to quit but have had little success. I also work with the family members who have reached their own "bottom," I offer individual counseling, family meetings and/interventions. on line, by phone or in-person.

"In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer." - Albert Camus. Learning to live life without drugs and alcohol can feel like an unbearable task. Making the best decision for a loved one, child, or spouse can be one of the hardest yet most rewarding decisions to make. I am here to assist along the journey. Addiction has impacted my life personally. I decided to join the field professionally in 2013. I currently serve as program coordinator for an outpatient program and drug counselor for the 417th district juvenile drug court.

Life can be complicated. It can be confusing. It can just wear a person out. Sometimes, just an objective listener is all we want, all we need. As a licensed counselor, an ordained minister, and what they call an acu-detox specialist; I can offer you a listening ear, an acupuncture treatment, and a balanced view of how to navigate this thing we call life. If your experiences with religion have left you filled with guilt and shame, a more balanced and realistic view of spirituality may be helpful to you. I am supportive of abstinence, Moderation Management, S.O.S., S.M.A.R.T., MAT, & all other forms of harm reduction recovery.

My greatest strength is empathy, the ability to put myself in the shoes of my client to understand what they are feeling. Every brain is as unique as DNA, which means problems can present differently in people and can be triggered by different issues. I work with all ages, from children with ADHD to senior citizens with cognitive decline. Sometimes the client needs to build a toolbox, and other times, we can teach the brain new ways of processing information. It all depends on what issues you are dealing with in order to determine what solutions are available. I will guide you through what options are available for you to decide.

If you are pursuing counseling for yourself or your teen for the first time, I commend you on your bravery. It’s not easy to know what to look for in a therapist. I pride myself on being able to put my clients at ease and meeting them where they are. I develop an individualized treatment plan for each client based on their specific needs. My goal is to give my clients a “tool box” to help them cope with life’s difficulties. I want to help you feel more positive, improve your relationships, and recognize and change patterns that aren't working for you so you can have more peace and satisfaction in your life.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
