Life is full of surprises and often we are caught off guard. "I am not sure what else I can do", "Am I doing the right thing"," I just can't seem to get over my problem", "I wish I had someone to help me with my racing thoughts", " I want to be social but I am scared and need help". Does any of these statements resonate with you? Even successful people can have unresolved struggles. Depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and disturbing life experiences can block our happiness. I help my clients move beyond their stumbling blocks.

My primary clinical experience focuses on helping adolescents and adults develop coping skills and set goals during key life transitions, such as college and career challenges, pre- and post-marital counseling, and other significant life changes. I also specialize in ADHD treatment, utilizing a range of evidence-based approaches. In addition, I have extensive experience treating various mental health disorders, including borderline personality disorder, mood disorders and anxiety related disorders. My holistic approach to assessment and treatment sets me apart, addressing the whole person rather than solely focusing on diagnosis.

My interests include Faith Based Counseling and women's issues.
With over 20 years of experience working with families and youths as a Professional Counselor, School Counselor, Family Education Specialist, certified Personality Insights Analyst, and Neuroeducational Specialist, I have learned to recognize each individual as a person with value, regardless of history or present struggles. We identify where you have been and how that equips you to set positive future goals. I, too, have faced challenges in life and have learned they do not define me, instead they give me new knowledge and provide a springboard to personal growth. I see the best in people, even when they can't see it themselves.

Going through rough transitions in life such as dealing with a disability, loss of someone, family conflict, relationship issues, self-esteem issues, or identity issues can take a toll on your mind, body, and spirit. It is extremely challenging to have to deal with all these emotions with nobody to vent to and explore positive ways to deal with these issues. My ideal client is someone who understands and desires a better outlook on life and a better perspective of themselves. Even though you may be going through adjustment to new challenges that create stress, anxiety, or depression, there is always hope.

Asking for help is one of the hardest yet most vital parts of growth and self-improvement in our lives. We all need help at some point - yes, even me! Therapy can not only help in dealing with the chaos life throws at us but also help us learn how and when to ask for that help. I firmly believe that everyone deserves a safe environment to explore oneself and improve overall mental health. I'm also incredibly passionate about advocating for the expansion of mental health awareness through psychoeducation and increasing access to quality care.

Allowing my clients to experience the world of counseling in a positive way. I practice positive psychology, which will give my clients a whole new way of looking at their lives, even though the world may not be the most positive place they see. My clients will be introduced to skills that will help them move forward in a life they thought they were "stuck" in. I help my clients see their strengths as their motivators for life's uneasy situations. I am a counselor that is a Christian, and can assist those clients that use faith as a basis for handling life's obstacles.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
