HABLO ESPANOL! My story is a bit unique as to how I became a psychotherapist. I studied abroad in Costa Rica during college where I learned the Spanish language and where my love of adventure and exploration began. After moving to Los Angeles for several years, I decided to then move to New York City to pursue a career in music which is my first love. I was living in NYC and working for Sony Music on September 11, 2001 which changed my life dramatically. I decided to return to The University of Texas in Austin and obtained my Masters in Social Work in an effort to pursue a career in helping others which is my second love.

Whether you're having a hard time adjusting, coping with anxiety or depression, or don't know what else to do with your child, counseling may help.
I believe that our past experiences shape how we think, behave, and react to new experiences. However, some of our beliefs, fears, and habits hinder us in the present and negatively affect our behaviors. I view my role as helping clients develop alternative ways of thinking in order for clients to reach their desired goals.

I have also worked with children, adolescents, and adults with a wide-range of diagnoses.
Life has its ups and downs and sometimes talking with someone else can provide a new outlook and comfort. I believe that through the therapeutic relationship individuals can receive the support they need to help them through the up and down moments of life. I focus on what each individual client needs and desires to change in the therapeutic setting. I work from a primarily Cognitive-Behavioral perspective, focusing on the link between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors as it pertains to current symptoms and behavioral presentation. Therapy is a personal and individual journey, but I believe the journey does not have to occur alone.

Child Therapists

What can a child therapist help with?

A therapist can help with any difficult experience a child may encounter growing up, including learning problems or anxiety related to school, relationship challenges with friends or parents, bullying, intense emotions or phobias, divorce and family dynamics, or the death of a pet or loved one. A therapist can help children process their experience and develop coping skills in an age-appropriate way.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
