Many people see therapy as a one-sided conversation, full of psychobabble and jargon. That is definitely not me! I want to help you achieve the solutions and life changes you are looking for while learning about yourself in new ways. Life is too short to surrender to depression, bad relationship patterns, or let
trauma
control us. Therapy gives us new tools to deal with life on life’s terms and the benefit of an objective, third-person perspective. We absolutely can be free of emotional pain and find meaning in our lives if we believe change is possible, we want to change, and we are willing to do the work.

I have a special interest in
trauma
treatment and am certified in the treatment of complex
PTSD
.
I have been a psychologist for over 30 years with a breadth of experience in a variety of clinical settings. I received extensive training in psychodynamic therapy, including studies at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. This depth approach is especially helpful for individuals who have a pattern of difficulties in relationships or have personality issues that hold them back in their personal and professional lives. Individuals with long standing self-esteem issues often find a depth approach especially helpful as do individuals with anxiety and depression who have not been helped by other therapy approaches.

A secondary focus of my work surrounds attachment, inner child, self-compassion, and reparenting processes in relation to
trauma
.
If you find yourself experiencing unwanted behaviors, anxiety, feelings of guilt or shame, or even feeling like you don't fit in you are in the right place. Therapy can provide a space for understanding, healing and growth. I offer a safe space of non-judgment to help you explore the issues that are arising in your life and causing you pain or discomfort. It's my belief that as social, curious beings, healthy and meaningful connection plays a crucial role in our ability to relate to the world around us and ourselves. I bring this forward in my work as a counselor and emphasize the importance of vulnerability and self-compassion.

Each session we process your anxiety "triggers" and the
trauma
behind them AND heal these tender spots through EMDR and Brainspottting.
As far as anyone can tell, you have your life together. But on the inside, you feel stressed, overwhelmed, lonely and stuck. You just can't understand why you can't seem to "pull yourself together." At times your heart is racing, your palms are sweating and you can’t catch your breath. You can't focus, you don't feel motivated to do anything and you wake up at 3 am with a "to-do" list screaming in your head. You manage your stress and anxiety by eating, drinking, shopping, working, & trying to stay busy...but it doesn't make it feel any better. You keep thinking, there has got to be a better way to live.

I worked with self esteem issues and self image, mental health diagnoses related to
trauma
, abuse, self harm and risky behaviors-to include suicidal behaviors.
Being heard and being understood - the concept of belonging. At times, the concept of belonging is complicated when you have thoughts which block the enjoyment of the present moment. At times we might hear, “Get it over it. It’s all in your head,” but we know all too well that what is happening is very real-outside of our heads-and it’s part of our every day routine. Traumas and unwanted life experiences cause uncertainty and make you wonder if things will ever be ok. The first step is the most challenging because reaching out for help can be frighting but together we can work towards goals to create the best version of you.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
