I am Trey Lackey, a marriage and family counselor, with over 30 years of experience helping persons with individual, marriage, family, and parenting issues. I understand that life can be tough: everyday stress, frustrations, worries, and even relationships that aren't working, no matter how hard you try. None of us should go through the tough stuff alone. Many people find that therapy can help them find the courage and skills to face challenges head-on, and finally begin to achieve the life they really want and deserve. I truly believe the same could be true for you.

I can help with individual counseling, marital counseling, group and family counseling, parenting issues, transition, grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, and other general life issues.
Hello, I’m Tamara! I was born and raised in South Texas. I have always been drawn to the complexities of relationships and how they shape us so ultimately found myself in a healing profession after “trying out” several other educational paths including math and music. None quite fit until I enrolled in the Master of Counseling program. It’s been a ride! I graduated from Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi (Summa Cum Laude, 2009) with a Master of Science Degree in Counseling, emphasis in Marriage & Family Therapy.

I do this by working closely with the parent , and providing wrap-around support for the entire family.
Children thrive when they are doing what they know and love best – playing! Sessions with children include play and focus on interactive ways to engage the child in conversation. Play disarms fear, which allows children to become comfortable within the session. Providing children with this space allows their voices to be heard. While sessions are filled with a lot of fun, I also have a natural ability to engage children in meaningful conversation, encourage parents to a deeper relationship with their children, and provide ongoing resources that will help the family long-term.

Who needs counseling? Why do people generally seek counseling? Counseling should not be a last resort. Many people look to counseling as a means to develop a plan for tackling life's obstacles or gain perspective - be it life pressures, trouble with romantic , parent -child, or family relationships, parenting , job related stress, or transistion. Counseling can provide a safe place to emotionally and relationally explore solutions that are right for you. Not one person's path is the same.

Life can really be unpredictable at times. Whether it be a death, a diagnosis, career change, or divorce. Maybe parenting has more tears than happiness. Maybe your marriage isn't what you expected. Life can throw you curveballs and the constant pivoting and planning and required flexibility can weigh you down. You're not alone. We live in a world where fear and anxiety take the wheel but we crave solid ground. You just want a "normal" day; whatever that means.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
