family
counseling, parenting issues, transition, grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, and other general life issues.
Hello, I’m Tamara! I was born and raised in South Texas. I have always been drawn to the complexities of relationships and how they shape us so ultimately found myself in a healing profession after “trying out” several other educational paths including math and music. None quite fit until I enrolled in the Master of Counseling program. It’s been a ride! I graduated from Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi (Summa Cum Laude, 2009) with a Master of Science Degree in Counseling, emphasis in Marriage &
Family Therapy
.

While seeking help can be intimidating, you've already taken the first step. I have extensive experience in foster care, adoption,
family
issues as well as individual &
family
difficulties due to trauma and divorce. In play therapy I ask families to take an active role in your child's healing process. I value a team approach; frequent communication, and make myself available through email as well as phone. I've spent several years specializing in trauma informed care for childen and families, attachment disorders, out of control behaviors, and sensory issues. Education & Support for these families is my goal.

Common struggles I help with include
family
of origin issues, anxiety, depression, self-worth issues, & adjusting to difficult life transitions such as graduating high school or college and venturing out on your own for the first time.
You may often find yourself wondering, why am I like this? You react to things in a way that you wish were different. You’re aware that the way you think/feel is irrational, but you can’t seem to change it. You feel stuck & are seeking to understand yourself better. Many of us come from difficult families - which is our first experience about the world, often setting the standard for what is "normal" to us. If you come from a
family
with a history of unhealthy patterns, it is likely that you are struggling as you enter adulthood. Common patterns include absent parents, unstable relationships, emotional/physical abuse, or addiction.

Who needs counseling? Why do people generally seek counseling?
Counseling should not be a last resort. Many people look to counseling as a means to develop a plan for tackling life's obstacles or gain perspective - be it life pressures, trouble with romantic , parent-child, or
family
relationships, parenting, job related stress, or transistion.
Counseling can provide a safe place to emotionally and relationally explore
solutions that are right for you.
Not one person's path is the same.

I do this by working closely with the parent, and providing wrap-around support for the entire
family
.
Children thrive when they are doing what they know and love best – playing! Sessions with children include play and focus on interactive ways to engage the child in conversation. Play disarms fear, which allows children to become comfortable within the session. Providing children with this space allows their voices to be heard. While sessions are filled with a lot of fun, I also have a natural ability to engage children in meaningful conversation, encourage parents to a deeper relationship with their children, and provide ongoing resources that will help the
family
long-term.

I was born into an addictive and dysfunctional
family
.
People are feeling pain, fear, discomfort and confusion and are appearing as "normal" beings who show up in the world. There is often a disconnected feel with self and lack of motivation and awareness to change. Overall, people want to feel supported, validated and comforted in life's circumstances. Having an unbiased, non-judgmental and free space to be themselves, is the key to unlocking new doors from within.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
