Do you have collective grief experienced as a first responder or member of the military?
Another day underway... Went to bed exhausted, woke up the same way. Spent an hour last night staring at the ceiling…drift off and bam, time to wake up. Living the dream...not. More like another frickin' long day...spent 20 minutes (you didn't have) searching for your keys. Driving to work, everyone's out to piss you off with their driving. Cut off twice, honked at, and the person tapping their brakes 100 times pushed you over the edge. 15-hour work shifts draining what little energy you have. Mind's all over the place. Overwhelmed and stuck. On your 4th argument of the week with your partner, it’s only Wednesday.

I also work with individuals who have experienced trauma and moral injury, with a special focus on veterans, first responders, healthcare providers, and those from dysfunctional families.
I have a specialized interest in working with parents and caregivers of children living with chronic illness. I understand that when your child is navigating long-term medical challenges, the entire family is impacted. You may find yourself juggling multiple responsibilities—managing numerous medical appointments, advocating for your child, maintaining a household, and holding space for the emotional needs of your child and family—all while trying to keep yourself afloat. As a caregiver, you may feel overwhelmed, isolated, and emotionally exhausted as you navigate your new normal. You may be experiencing grief and self-doubt.

I seek to walk alongside individuals & couples who may be experiencing a valley of difficulty or pain; or those who may be on the mountain exploring new growth & opportunities. I am particularly interested in working with men and boys who may be struggling with sexual concerns; or couples affected by sexual issues such as pornography, infidelity, or sexual addiction. I also believe that we are a product of our experiences, and that they affect the lens by which we do life, until we are able to process through those "traumas." I am also a Veteran, retiring after 20 years of military service. I enjoy spending time with my wife!

Most of my experience is in working with military, couples, students, and adolescents who struggle with addiction, grief, trauma, parenting, and relationships.
Over the years, I have come to realize we are truly meant to be in community with one another and not go through difficult times on our own. I don't believe God intended us to live a life filled with worry or fear, so I hope you'll reach out for help and allow me to guide you to where you want to be.

In addition to my counseling training, I have also served as a minister and a fire chaplain and have experience with military personnel and first responders.
Men and women are different, and guys have very specific counseling needs. A lot of men cringe at the thought of counseling, and understandably so. My goal is to show the guy who hates the idea of counseling how helpful it can be and that masculinity isn't inherently negative. Being a man is a good thing and being a good man is even better. My PhD research was on help-seeking behavior in men. I know that making that first phone call seems terrifying, but you owe it to yourself to give this a shot. You owe it to yourself to be well.

I am a veteran and can empathize with other veterans who have experienced significant events during their time in service.
It can happen to anyone. Life is going along just fine, and then before you realize what happened, you find yourself in a tough situation you never expected. I have specialized training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, as well as Solutions-Focused Therapy. I use a holistic approach; considering the whole person in their environment.

Veterans Therapists
Why is mental health important for veterans and the military?
Veterans are more likely to face mental health challenges than the general public, and such mental health challenges can make it difficult for them to navigate day-to-day life. Improved mental health can result in better interpersonal relationships, lower levels of stress, and decreased dependence on substances, such as drugs or alcohol, for many veterans. Addressing common mental health conditions can also help facilitate recovery from physical health challenges that are faced by many veterans, such as chronic pain, physical injury, or poor sleeping patterns. Therapists trained in working with veterans can help address these concerns and help improve veteran mental health.
How can veterans get access to mental health support?
There are many resources for veterans to get mental health support, including through the VA or through their primary care doctor. Many service personnel are eligible for free or reduced-cost mental health counseling through the VA, depending on their service history and current income. Veterans can also utilize online directories, such as Psychology Today, or nonprofit organization resources like the Wounded Warrior Project, to find a therapist or other healthcare professional that specializes in their specific mental health needs. Veterans may also benefit from community-based groups that facilitate social connection and/or address specific concerns, such as Alcoholics Anonymous.
What type of therapy is best for veterans?
Veterans may benefit from multiple types of therapy, depending on what mental health challenges they are facing. Veterans seeking therapy for anxiety or depression may benefit from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which encourage clients to understand how their thought patterns influence their behavior. Veterans with PTSD may seek other more specialized forms of therapy to treat trauma symptoms, such as EMDR or exposure therapy. Many veterans and military personnel may also benefit from family or couples counseling to address the stress and adjustment challenges that can be associated with military life.
Can therapy for veterans help with trauma and PTSD?
Therapy can be highly effective in helping veterans with trauma and PTSD. Therapists specializing in veteran mental health often have extensive training and experience helping veterans navigate symptoms of trauma and can teach clients coping techniques to handle common symptoms associated with trauma and PTSD. Some therapists may use talk therapy as their primary approach, while others utilize more structured therapy modalities in sessions, such as EMDR. Veterans can try multiple therapy modalities to find the best fit for them. Therapists can also help make referrals or connect clients with available resources, such as VA benefits, to help address other life concerns.
