I specialize in CBT, TF-CBT, as well as person-centered therapy and happen to work very well with many age groups (pre-teens, adolescents, young adults, adults) with problems/issues such as anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, trauma, as well as behavioral concerns.
Growing up in today’s society comes with so many challenges that at times can seem so overwhelming. Sometimes having someone that can be a listening ear and offer tools to help one succeed can go a very long way. One may need someone they can confide in and build trust with so that the stress and emotional toll that these challenges can bring are lessened day by day.

Throughout my work in the mental health field, I have found my specialization in working with individuals, as well as couples, who are seeking more effective ways to cope with stress, communication, depression, and anxiety among other varied topics.
I work from a variety of theoretical orientations, but I do find that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be beneficial to people with a variety of issues with how life has been going lately. Challenging and changing perception can really help to put the change into life that people are seeking. If you are not sure what you need, we can work from there too!

Using play-based techniques for ages 3-12—and insight-oriented exploration with practical tools for older clients—I help clients navigate challenges with anxiety, depression, identity development, and trauma.
Do you feel stuck in anxiety, self-doubt, or emotional patterns that seem bigger than the present moment? Or is your child struggling with intense reactions, shutdowns, or behaviors that don’t fully make sense? Often, early experiences and relational wounds shape how we cope long after the moment has passed. When big feelings start affecting our daily life and relationships, it can feel exhausting and isolating. Whether I’m working with a child, a teen, or a young adult, my goal is the same: to create a safe, supportive space where big feelings are welcomed. Together we work toward deeper healing, not just temporary relief.

For military families, anxiety is often a shared yet unspoken companion. The unique challenges of military life, from deployments to constant relocations, can foster a sense of perpetual uncertainty. Acknowledging these shared experiences is vital in understanding that while the journey is challenging, it's also a path towards collective strength and support.

Most of my clients are dealing with life transitions, depression, anxiety, setting boundaries, trauma, grief, and life circumstances that are keeping them stuck.
Though CBT is the most used therapy, I also use grief therapy, EMDR, motivational interviewing, and others depending on the situation and what my client gets the most benefit from.

Men and women are different, and guys have very specific counseling needs. A lot of men cringe at the thought of counseling, and understandably so. My goal is to show the guy who hates the idea of counseling how helpful it can be and that masculinity isn't inherently negative. Being a man is a good thing and being a good man is even better. My PhD research was on help-seeking behavior in men. I know that making that first phone call seems terrifying, but you owe it to yourself to give this a shot. You owe it to yourself to be well.

I work with a broad range of issues but have a great deal of experience working with people who have experienced different kinds of trauma including childhood abuse and sexual assault, depression, anxiety, and relationship concerns (romantic/social/family).
My approach to therapy involves helping people gain awareness about their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and patterns. This includes improving healthy coping, exploring how patterns developed, and establishing new ways of responding. I am trained in providing EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing), & my clients have found this very beneficial.

Pitts works with adults helping deal with depression and anxiety as well as personality disorders.
I've become very familiar with the impact that trauma has on the life of an individual, and even their family. Because trauma may be limiting to your happiness and growth, it is time to eliminate the trauma responses from your life. BrainSpotting Process does that very well. Ask how it can help you.

My work is grounded in creating a safe space where you can speak openly, without fear of being judged, and discover a direction moving toward growth and healing. My experience includes working inside of the criminal justice system as well as in the substance abuse field; I worked closely with people navigating shame, guilt, and a quiet belief they just aren’t “good enough.” I learned it’s often the emotional weight we carry—not our history—that keeps us stuck. I help clients make sense of how their experiences shape their patterns and self-perception—not to place blame, but instead to bring clarity and freedom.

Depression Therapists
What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
