Whether your child or adolescent struggles with self-esteem, stress, difficult behaviors, history of trauma or abuse, relationships, school or is experiencing a big life transition such as divorce, death, or illness - or they are expressing feelings of anxiety or depression with no known trigger, - therapy can be a safe space for them to work through their emotions and build on coping strategies. While my current practice is dedicated mostly to child /adolescent clients, I do work with some adults, especially those impacted by cancer, bereavement, infertility, reproductive trauma, ADHD or parenting concerns.

While I have more than fifteen years of experience assessing and treating children , adolescents, and young adults, I have also had the rare opportunity to practice psychology in three different settings: a large public school, a private school's evaluation center, and private practice. These diverse experiences provide me a unique perspective, and they allow me to be particularly helpful to children who are struggling emotionally and academically.

Play Therapy-I use play to communicate with children and establish a relationship so that I can understand what's going on in their lives and help them process trauma and other emotionally laden events.
Sometimes things happen along the way that are too overwhelming to deal with on your own. I can help you identify the factors that are holding you back and provide support while you develop the necessary skills and insights to move forward. Trauma, divorce, behavior issues at school/home, grief/loss, family and life transitions, anxiety and depression can challenge even the healthiest individuals and families. I use a combination of traditional talk therapy, play therapy, and EMDR in my treatment of children , adolescents, women, adults, and families. I customize each client's treatment based on their unique needs.

Anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, attention problems, school stress, difficult relationships, life transitions, chronic illness, grief, mental illness and other experiences compound the inherent challenges of growing up. You and your child may feel discouraged and alone braving these challenges yet experiencing challenges is universal and affirms our connection to each other. How different would life be if we instinctively embraced this truth and reached out for connection to grow through challenges together?

I specialize in helping children and adolescents with special needs, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and different types of challenging behaviors that might come up at school or at home.
Life is a journey that we each take and sometimes we can become tired and overwhelmed. It can be the weight of going through each day completing basic tasks, or the weight of being a parent, a spouse, a child or a friend that becomes too much to handle by yourself. If you have been feeling this way, I would love to be that person to sit, listen, and be present with you. Seeking out a therapist, for some, is overwhelming and out of their comfort zone. I want this experience to be one that offers you peace and a feeling of safety as we process and problem solve the many issues that life throws our way together.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
