I specialize in helping children and adolescents with special needs, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and different types of challenging behaviors that might come up at school or at home.
Life is a journey that we each take and sometimes we can become tired and overwhelmed. It can be the weight of going through each day completing basic tasks, or the weight of being a parent, a spouse, a child or a friend that becomes too much to handle by yourself. If you have been feeling this way, I would love to be that person to sit, listen, and be present with you. Seeking out a therapist, for some, is overwhelming and out of their comfort zone. I want this experience to be one that offers you peace and a feeling of safety as we process and problem solve the many issues that life throws our way together.

Whether your child or adolescent struggles with self-esteem, stress, difficult behaviors, history of trauma or abuse, relationships, school or is experiencing a big life transition such as divorce, death, or illness - or they are expressing feelings of anxiety or depression with no known trigger, - therapy can be a safe space for them to work through their emotions and build on coping strategies. While my current practice is dedicated mostly to child/adolescent clients, I do work with some adults, especially those impacted by cancer, bereavement, infertility, reproductive trauma, ADHD or parenting concerns.

While I have more than fifteen years of experience assessing and treating children, adolescents, and young adults, I have also had the rare opportunity to practice psychology in three different settings: a large public school, a private school's evaluation center, and private practice. These diverse experiences provide me a unique perspective, and they allow me to be particularly helpful to children who are struggling emotionally and academically.

Life's a journey, with many unexpected twists and turns. Sometimes we need someone to talk to, someone to share our thoughts and feelings, dreams and fears, and help guide us toward resolution. I want to help my clients navigate this path, and to also experience the possibilities of living their best life possible. I work with older teens and adults, and also specialize in women's issues across the lifespan, as well as those with health concerns. College students are a special interest, as are educators, as I’ve worked as a teacher and school counselor and understand the stress and dynamics associated with the profession.

I consider my role as psychologist as one who strives to focus on the personal strengths, abilities, and vulnerabilities of a person through empathic support and optimism for positive change. To create a safe place where immediate issues, or chronic problems and patterns, can be identified and explored. To appreciate the whole person as a means to make sense of their experiences and behaviors.

My clients are seeking strategies that can be easily incorporated to address the imbalances in their lives. By considering the approach that works best for each stage in life, my clients learn to navigate their own path to wellness and to make adjustments as needed. OT involves taking action and formulation of adaptive responses to challenges rather than just talking about solutions. Learning to recognize the physical, emotional and behavioral manifestation of stress, and establishing healthy lifestyle choices is my goal no matter what diagnoses are presented.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years of more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
