As a therapist, I see myself as a guide someone who walks alongside you as you deepen self-understanding, build self-acceptance, and reconnect with the strengths you already have. My goal is to help you create a more balanced, meaningful, and joyful life. I believe many of our inner resources are already within us; therapy simply offers the space to uncover them. In a safe and supportive environment, we slow down, reflect, and reconnect with what matters most. As you gain awareness of the factors influencing your challenges, you can make intentional changes, align with your values, and move forward with greater clarity.

Yes, unresolved emotional distress or a history of trauma can turn into daily anxiety, unexplained symptoms or even persistent physical pain.
Therapy with me is a real conversation. I show up as an engaged, transparent person who cares deeply and isn't afraid to be direct. I know your goal is real change, not just to talk. I will encourage you to explore difficult feelings and sit with discomfort, because I know that is where true healing happens.

I utilize CBT, DBT, ACT, and EMDR to help you cope with a variety of life difficulties, including but not limited to trauma, grief, chronic pain and illness, and the aging process from youth to old age.
Hello! My name is Emily, and I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor based in San Antonio. I believe that the interaction between the mind and the body should be an important topic of focus in mental health counseling, and the interplay between these factors cannot be ignored. In addition, I believe it is important to acknowledge and explore how social and economic realities can stifle us from being our truest, fullest selves. My goal as your therapist is to help you feel more at peace with your mind and body, and to affirm and support you in building confidence to become your most fulfilled self.

I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, life transitions, and chronic pain in teens to older adults.
You find yourself wanting to stay busy because slowing down makes you think too much about everything. You notice guilt or shame come up when you want to say no to someone. These days, yelling or slamming doors is the only thing that helps when that irritable or angry feeling takes over your body. You wish you could find other ways to deal but it seems like nothing is helping and you don't know what to do.

We are all unique in our histories, yet feelings of anxiety, depression, loss, and love are all universal. Some days feel easy to handle, and others may feel overwhelming and unending. For many people, painful experiences outweigh the happier parts of their lives. My passion is to help people of all ages. Our emotions are the same regardless of how old we are. We can work together through sensitive subjects and set goals towards healing and thriving. Reaching out is a big step, sometimes the hardest. I would love the opportunity to meet with you in person or talk via teletherapy. I would be honored to hear your story.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
