I find I work best with young adults through those age 100. While it's true more women present for therapy than men, I find I work very well with male clients and historically have seen as many men as women. I also work well with those from diverse communities. Many people find themselves struggling as they adjust to change. A divorce, a move, a job loss, retirement, becoming an empty nester, losing your mobility or independence, or downsizing can sometimes prove more difficult than anticipated. I can assist in adapting to those situations. Additionally, I can help with depression, anxiety, grief, or occupational issues.

My name is Carrie, and I am an LPC-A working under Dr. Angela Waggoner, LPC-S. My goal is to help my clients explore their emotions, build resilience, and develop healthy coping strategies. My approaches may be described as person-centered as I know "one size fits all" is not applicable in therapy. I use evidence-based interventions based on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and strive to be holistic as mental health impacts every aspect of life. I would be honored to help my clients and look forward to doing my best by them.

Who among us hasn't felt out-of-sync, overwhelmed or alone? It's not a matter of if something hits us, but when, and I'm not being pessimistic. What determines how well we ride out a crisis is how many healthy coping skills we learn through our life transitions. Even a loving family can’t teach what it doesn’t know. I want clients coming to therapy with me to know that therapy is not about changing you, but about evolving into your more authentic self, dropping unhelpful thinking habits that keep us imprisoned in old hurts, and learning to forgive ourselves & others for not knowing any better. “When we know better, we do better.”

My ideal client is someone who is open to therapy and open to not only building trust with me, but also building trust within themselves. Therapy can be intimidating. My ideal client is someone that despite the taboo or intimidation that the idea of “therapy” brings, they are ready to move forward and spark change within themselves.

My ideal clients are adults carrying grief others don't see—loss from chronic illness, caregiving, miscarriage, relationship endings, identity shifts, menopause, or life transitions. They're exhausted from performing fine while privately struggling. They need a space where all forms of loss are recognized as legitimate, someone who won't rush them. They want to stop carrying this weight alone, to process at their own pace, and finally feel seen. They're reaching out now because they can't keep pretending anymore.

FAQ - About Geriatric Therapy
What can a geriatric psychologist help with?
Geriatric therapists specialize in the cognitive and neurological challenges that often accompany aging, including dementia, memory loss, and age-related cognitive decline. They also address the psychological conditions that frequently co-occur with these issues, such as depression, anxiety, and grief. Geriatric therapists and psychologists are trained to assess cognitive functioning, identify symptoms that may warrant further evaluation, and conduct or refer for formal neurological assessment when needed. In many cases, geriatric therapists also work closely with medical doctors to manage a client's overall health, and they may support caregivers and family members navigating the demands of caring for an aging loved one.

Why might someone seek a geriatric psychologist?
Someone might seek a geriatric therapist when they or a loved one begins experiencing cognitive or neurological changes and is unsure whether those changes are a normal part of aging or something that requires clinical attention. A geriatric therapist can help connect families with appropriate next steps. They are also commonly sought following a new diagnosis, when clients and families are working to understand what that diagnosis means practically and emotionally, and what to expect as a condition progresses. When seeking a therapist, it can be helpful to consider whether a clinician with a stronger psychotherapy focus or one with more of a social work orientation, who can help connect clients with assisted living or medical resources, would be the better fit.

What type of therapy might a geriatric therapists specialize in?
Geriatric therapist often combine psychotherapy with psychoeducation, helping clients and their families understand cognitive and neurological conditions and what to expect as they progress. For clients experiencing anxiety or depression alongside cognitive decline, therapists may draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or mindfulness-based approaches. For clients with dementia specifically, therapists may be trained in specialized modalities such as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST), which is designed to preserve cognitive functioning.

Can geriatric psychologists help people who suffer from dementia?
Yes, and this is a core area of geriatric psychology. Therapists specializing in dementia can work directly with clients on memory loss and cognitive functioning, while also addressing conditions that commonly co-occur, such as depression and anxiety. They can provide caregivers with objective assessments of a client's functioning and disease progression, and are typically well-versed in community resources available to dementia patients and their families.
