Additionally, my work experiences include foster parenting, long-term residential care (child/ adolescent ), care/case management, emergency shelter care (child/ adolescent ), and private practice.
My goal is to build self-esteem and to create a sense of empowerment in each person with whom I work. My work is with all ages through various modalities, including play therapy, games, crafts, and traditional counseling techniques. Children and adolescents are guided to develop effective techniques for navigating the issues and concerns that are encountered during the developmental and formative years. Similarly, I work with adults in showing how to work through the various obstacles and difficulties - both internal and external - that are encountered throughout life.

Have you seen you a change occur in your child or teen and are left in confusion? Are you concerned about your child’s behavior? I will work collaboratively with you and your child on solutions to the concerns. Sessions with me involve movement and play. Your child will be given a space to call their own, a space that is safe for creativity and active play. Together, through creative projects and moving around outside, we can find that sense of self again. Sitting in a therapy room talking can get monotonous, so let’s bring life to the therapy room. Let’s let our creative and active sides strike that match of hope and joy again.

I am also a married mother of one adult and one teenager and three cats.
You're tired of not getting your needs met and again putting yourself last. Another day, another argument. Maybe others don't know how your past keeps getting in the way of your life. People expect you to just get over things and move on, but you're finding that harder and harder to do. You get advice from trusted friends, but nothing really changes, so you are not sure that talking about things with a counselor will really help.

Psychological testing is a method of gathering and analyzing individualized data in order to better understand an individual’s personality, including diagnostic criteria and how the brain functions across a variety of tasks, such as attention or problem solving. Currently, DTS is able to offer in-depth personality testing, ADHD testing as well as Autism testing and IQ testing. The cost varies for each testing, starting at $500. While we are in network with insurance (Aetna, BCBS, Cigna and Tricare), they do not always cover the cost of testing.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
