Menninger's Adolescent IOP
Licensed Professional Counselor
Menninger offers an intensive outpatient program for adolescents working on managing their mental health, social skills, substance use recovery, and/or adjustments at home or school where they can get peer and professional support in. The goal is to engage the adolescent, along with the family in the process of healing, learn how to cope, and embrace positive change. The program is for ages 12 to 18 who may be transitioning from a hospital or residential treatment or who need more structure and focus than typical outpatient therapy. Over eight weeks, treatment includes: group therapy, individual therapy, and family therapy.

I often work with people with anxiety, identity questions, substance use , existential angst, and mental illness (including psychosis).
My biggest delight comes in helping people push through (and maybe even embrace!) the messiness of being human to live a life you find fulfilling. In my work, the people who seem to experience this most intensely and find healing with this kind of therapy are: -> people who identify as LGBTQIA+, ->people who experience psychosis, ->people who identify as rebels and troublemakers,-> people who feel outcast, misunderstood, or marginalized, ->people who are living lifestyles outside the “norm.” Often people come to work on existential angst, identity exploration, breaking stigmas, anxiety, trauma, and self worth/acceptance.

Healing from trauma, grief, unhealthy relationships or substance use can happen in an environment without shame or judgment. I tailor the treatment plan for each client's needs utilizing evidenced-based practices and incorporating 12-step recovery, stage of change model and Motivational Interviewing techniques. With these strategies, adolescents and adults have been able to develop healthier coping skills and the ability to thrive.

At the heart of the therapeutic relationship is connection! My passion is working with all types of individuals, believing that on the inside we have more likeness than differences. Together we explore individual and family history and establish goals for therapy. I provide them with education and support to take the steps towards desired change. Some know they have a substance use problem, others aren't sure, and still others have been affected by the disease of addiction throughout their childhood and/or adult relationships.

I work with clients facing a variety of issues including substance use disorders, trauma, grief, relational difficulties, depression, anxiety, mood disorders and dual diagnoses.
I have yet to meet anyone whose life experience has been wholly devoid of struggle. It seems to be part of the human condition. Although relative, these struggles are something we are all faced with from time to time throughout our lives. In my experience, therapy provides us with the means to not only face and overcome these struggles, but also to find empowerment and purpose within what may have previously been only pain. My belief in the transformative gift one can experience through effective therapy was born during my own personal journey of healing and growth, and later solidified through my work with others.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
