It seems nearly impossible for folx to live honestly, freely, and unabashedly in today’s world. As a Black and queer therapist, I am dedicated to resistance; I help folx to get honest with themselves and others, to use their values to shape life goals, to unlearn restrictive mores that have aided in their oppressive, and to live a more liberating and affirming life.

I specialize in adjustment issues,
sleep
disorders including
insomnia
(using CBT-i), pain management, adjustment to chronic illness, PTSD, stress management, relationship issues, and substance abuse.
My practice centers around providing clients with the skills that they need to thrive in the face of stressful situations. Prior to entering private practice, I worked as a clinical psychologist on the spinal cord injury unit at TIRR. These individuals would have never otherwise sought mental health care but were faced with one of the most stressful and challenging experiences of their lives. My role was to help these individuals to effectively cope with serious, adverse medical events and to live happy, fulfilling lives. Likewise, in my private practice, I strive to help clients successfully navigate complex situations.

As a board certified neurotherapist and licensed professional counselor, I can identify and understand the underlying brain-based issues that cause mood,
sleep
, behavior, performance, memory and attention issues, among many others. The good news is, research has demonstrated that you can train the brain to function more effectively. Optimize Mind Care specializes in qEEG ("brain mapping") and qEEG-informed neurofeedback (EEG biofeedback or "brain training"). Neurofeedback is a brain-based technique that aligns with the National Institutes of Health's vision to create a diagnostic approach based on biology as well as a patient's symptoms, instead of symptoms alone.

After 30 years of clinical experience, training in EMDR for PTSD, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for
Insomnia
(by the American Academy of
Sleep
Medicine), and Neurofeedback (by the International Society for Neurofeedback Research) added fun and hope to my work.
Tired of talk therapy? Although I have many years experience doing this, and still love it, cutting edge, research-based therapies like neurofeedback, EMDR, Touchpoints utilize the strengths of the brain to solve many longtime problems which we now recognize as biologically-based. In the hands of a seasoned therapist, these can often be as successful as medication for
insomnia
, anxiety, depression, and relationship problems.

I can help you get the easy, effortless
sleep
you want again! In as few as 6-8 session, the treatment I use (CBT-I, Google it!) has the power to transform your
sleep
so that you can fall asleep easily.
If you've dreaded going to bed because you know it will be yet another night of tossing and turning, you know how desperate you can be to get some shuteye. Odds are high you're reading this at 3am. You may have tried everything--medications, natural supplements, meditation, oils, etc.--and nothing seems to work! It can be frustrating when you used to
sleep
so easily. You begin to feel like your
insomnia
has a life of its own, feeling drowsy on your commute to work, drinking cup after cup of coffee to make it through your day. You look on jealously at your partner or kid, who seem to
sleep
so effortlessly. It's just not fair!

You can have healthier relationships, feel like a good parent, get more restful

You are a professional, or a new or expecting parent, and are having to work harder than usual to maintain things and seem like your usual high-performing self. You're feeling worn out, you're having trouble sleeping, you're stressed and you just aren't sure how to cope. I am not accepting new clients but I DO HAVE OPENINGS in my online classes for
sleep
and chronic pain. Have you found yourself asking why you feel down when things around you seem to be going so well? Do you sometimes feel disconnected from the joy you once felt, and are now overwhelmed by just moving through your day? Sadness and worry can be difficult to manage on the best of days, and even harder when you can't quite put your finger on what has you feeling out of sorts. Working together, we can get to the bottom of what's troubling you and develop new strategies and solutions to the questions that are distressing you.

I work alongside adults and teens, treating anxiety, chronic stress,
sleep
problems, history of trauma, and/or co-occurring medical conditions. Most of us don’t recognize the ways in which we might be holding ourselves back, whether it be due to anxiety, our relationship with food, or beliefs that we have taken on from others. Life can be tough, and we all need a little help sometimes. Therapy provides an opportunity to learn new skills that can help you manage those tough or stressful situations. I use evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to help manage stress and decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety. My goal is to help you explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a safe and supportive environment so that you can manage and overcome future life stressors.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
