Therapy is a partnership that grows in an atmosphere of safety and acceptance. It allows one to rediscover the parts of selves which may have been disowned; to learn new skills to handle grief and distress; to build healthier, more nurturing relationships; and to gain access to one's own direct experience of the world. I nurture this collaboration with clients and recognize that within each of us there exists a deeper wisdom that, given adequate support, naturally moves toward healing and integration.

Together, we’ll explore healthier boundaries, effective coping strategies, and tools to manage to help you reclaim your time, reduce overwhelm, and create a life aligned with your values.

Everyone has problems with living at one time or another. How we think, perceive, feel and behave in responding to life’s demands impact our functioning and none of us do it well, all of the time. Life is complicated and many things interact and influence mental health. Struggles may be manifested as a variety of psychological symptoms and health problems. I am a veteran with 28 years as a clinical psychologist working in and with law enforcement, military and veterans. I also work with people who are aging and have chronic health problems such as diabetes. My goal is to help you live a life that is meaningful to you.

Are you worried about the security of your online psychotherapy notes? If large companies such as Change Healthcare and Transunion can be victims of a data hack, so can electronic health record companies. Indeed, a quick internet search will show you that psychotherapy notes have already been hacked and held for ransom. Tech experts have recently indicated that 1 in 6 data breaches now involves AI and that will likely get worse. If you want your psychotherapy records to be securely away from internet criminals across the globe, call my office. I'm old school. I use paper records and store them behind 3 separate locks.

As a psychodynamic therapist, I believe our past experiences influence how we show up in this moment, which means it's important to understand where your patterns started.
Most people that choose to see me have tried to figure it out on their own. They're exhausted from holding it together and saying they're okay. I can help you access and develop feelings of safety in your life, break relationship patterns that are no longer serving you, and to feel more aligned in your sense of self and boundaries. Through a collaborative relationship, I can help you process old trauma (with an emphasis on how it's impacting you now), better manage your anxiety, and cultivate the relationships you so deeply desire. As we build a safe partnership, you will find your courage and make the changes you're looking for.

You are successful, accomplished, and appear to have it all together, but secretly you feel anxious, burnt out, and never enough. I’m Sophie Vonner, LPC, and I specialize in helping high-achieving professionals, ambitious adults break free from the childhood patterns and trauma responses that are still driving your adult life. These aren't just habits; they are survival strategies that now cause overthinking, people-pleasing, and chronic guilt when you try to rest.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
