Welcome! My name is Abril and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 6 years of in the state of Texas. I’m most passionate about providing therapy to children, families, and supporting parents in need of skills and techniques to handle tough child behaviors in a warm & caring way. The primary difficulties I address with PCIT include oppositional behaviors/attitudes, tantrums, aggressive behaviors, anxiety (separation/selective mutism), ADHD, and distant parent -child relationships. A CBT approach is used with older children to address symptoms related to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and anger control difficulties.

You've been feeling scared that your relationship will not make it. As a parent , you've watched your child and family decline and disconnect. You are all out of things to do, as nothing has seemed to work. You've recently started feeling defeated regarding your relationships with those you care deeply for. This has affected your mood and how you show up in the world and unto yourself. You want relationships that don't always devolve into drama and craziness. You are tired of the same negative cycle and are ready to make a change.

Areas: well-being, health, lifestyle medicine, change/transition, relationships, ADHD, parenting , motherhood, coping/resilience, psychoeducation, navigating mental-health choices for self/loved one, effects of family member mental health.
I love working with women juggling life's demands, parents and educators tackling the awe-inspiring (often maddening) experiences of raising and growing children, and adolescents navigating the social and emotional adjustment to adulthood. We each have a fundamental need for connection, autonomy, and belonging, a need to be seen and heard. I listen. I use mind, brain, and health science to help clients identify and connect their needs and values with their larger visions; to cultivate health-promoting and life-giving habits, navigate change, get unstuck, build resilience, and live well. Coaching fosters self-exploration and growth.

My number one passion is parent coaching... Every child is different and parents often need a specific skillset to parent effectively. I'm trained in trauma and resiliency counseling - many experiences can be traumatic - hurricanes, flooding, divorce, accidents, assault, chronic pain, work issues - even COVID is considered traumatic to some people. Anxiety and depression are increasing as the long-term effects of COVID are being discovered.

I provide family therapy and parent /child coaching which supports you while I teach your children/teens how to manage transitions between two homes, stay out of the middle between co-parents, navigate their relationships with parents at different ages, and understand emotions.
I help stepfamily couples and single parents find the quickest path possible to confidence, support, and a workable plan that moves you in the direction of your goals from our first session- even in the most challenging situations. I partner with single parents to create a better life for you and your children; reduce the overwhelm, heal from your breakup; and move forward successfully. With blended family couples, we work together to manage stepparenting/stepchild issues, deal effectively with exes, and/or work through issues, so you can get back to the love and passion that brought you together. Video conference/phone appts available.

His focuses include ADHD, depression, anxiety, behavior disorders, trauma recovery, marriage, divorce, co- parenting , and couples therapy.
When we are young, we have a vision of what we want our lives to become. We want the best for our children, to have strong positive relationships, be happy, and achieve success. We see ourselves in a job that is fun and fulfilling something we want to do, and a group of friends with which to embark on adventures. Through the ebbs and flows of life, that vision we had when we were young transforms. We encounter obstacles, personal traumas, and life-altering events that significantly impact our well-being. We get caught up in pleasing others, providing for others, and longing for something more.

Navigating the world around us, and in our current times, is tricky for a lot of us! I specialize in working with children and adolescents, as well as assisting the adults who love them in their parenting role. Every family system has strengths and struggles, and parents bring their own experiences (having once been children themselves!) which inform their parenting skills and feelings about parenting , now. Additionally, I also see adults for individual work, outside of the parenting role, and have assisted many adults in thinking through decisions on how to live their best lives.

Being parents, raising a teen, and growing up can be difficult. We all know what it was like being a teenager, and maybe now you're here because you're experiencing what it's like to raise a teenager. While some of the emotions we run into parenting or being a teen hasn't changed, the world has certainly thrown us some curveballs over the past few years. This has left parents having to cope with new challenges that are harder to navigate than what many of us experienced growing up ourselves.

You wear a lot of hats in your life and carry the burden of responsibility for your family, for your partner, for your kids, for your colleagues. Over time, all of your hats have somehow softened your voice and have you feeling like you've lost who you are. You do a lot in your life out of duty, but you don't know how to balance that duty with who you want to be and the things you want to do for fun. You often don't know when you can speak up and voice how you are feeling about life. You often feel guilty speaking your truth because you feel like you are committed to being a good parent and partner.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
