I have counseled individuals, families, and couples for forty-four years. I assist clients with issues that include depression, anxiety, family communication, career choices, and the stress of physical illness. Trained in psychodynamic, client-centered, and Jungian methods, I tailor counseling to the needs of clients. I favor approaches that respect innate creativity, core values, and interdependence. In addition to talking, other modalities may include relaxation and imagery, sometimes called self-hypnosis, journaling, and the use of art. As a former priest I bring to my practice the conviction that problems are ultimately resolved by finding meaning and purpose.

Have you felt like everyday is a treadmill that's going too fast? Feeling guilty for taking time for yourself? Having doubts like: Am I in the right career? Are the people around me good for me? Why do I keep arguing with my family? Is there a disconnect within your social or cultural identity? Maybe the sense of belonging comes with straddling two or more cultures. Feeling overwhelmed by the weight of heavy expectations? Any of these issues can bring stress, confusion, regret, and a sense of isolation. I would love to help. I'm a child of Chinese immigrants trying to make the world a better place, one person at a time.

Does this sound familiar? You start talking about something small, like weekend plans or a chore, and somehow it spirals into that same old fight. Before you know it, you're both frustrated, nobody feels heard, and you're wondering how you got here... again. That distance between you keeps growing, and despite loving each other, you can't seem to break the cycle. Whether you're a couple preparing for marriage, navigating midlife challenges, or entering retirement, or an individual seeking clarity during life transitions, you want to move beyond feeling stuck. You're looking for practical tools to create meaningful change.

Hello and welcome to my profile! I initially developed a passion for the helping profession after being heavily involved with student life at my undergrad university, mentoring and helping underclassmen navigate the transition into adult life. Talking to so many students, I discovered how varied the stories and backgrounds are, each shaped by unique challenges, aspirations, and perspectives. These conversations have deepened my appreciation for the resilience, creativity, and personal growth that emerge from diverse experiences, reinforcing my commitment to understanding and supporting others on their unique journeys.

Life's path can be quite dark and confusing at times. When it is, you can often experience anxiety, depression, maladaptive behaviors, a lack of connectedness with others and lose a sense of meaning. Much of life is trying to satisfy similar basic emotional/social needs, yet everyone's experience is unique in getting there. You, as an individual, are a unique entity and should have this acknowledged and treated accordingly. I have applied this viewpoint of therapy to a host of presenting problems: anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief and loss, various stages of life, and others.

My ideal client is self-aware, thoughtful, and often caught in their own head. They may seem fine to others but struggle privately with anxiety, burnout, or feeling like they’re falling behind. They overthink, second-guess themselves, or can’t shake a critical inner voice. They want to feel more confident in who they are, make decisions with less fear, and finally feel like their life fits. What they want, more than anything, is permission to slow down, be seen without judgment, and figure things out at their own pace.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
