My name is Berit Benson and as the owner of Path & Purpose Therapy, I help young adults and millennials deal with the everyday challenges of modern life. They're dealing with everything from relationships and family pressures to chronic illness and addiction. They're feeling stressed and overwhelmed, or they might be feeling numb and disconnected. They're heading in new directions and navigating big transitions or they might be feeling stuck and unable to move forward in life. No matter what, they all share something in common: They're struggling in some way and are ready to assess the situation and take action.

When people are faced with difficulties in life, we are presented with a beautiful opportunity to flourish in unimaginable ways. Every human being possesses a resilient spirit within them to overcome obstacles. There are times, however, when it can be very difficult to connect with that resilient spirit. The decision to reach out for a helping hand can be one of the healthiest and most life changing investments you can make in yourself. It is a great honor and privilege for me to be a gift of service to my clients during some of the most challenging seasons of their lives, and to watch them RISE.

You can experience deep, lasting change. I want to help you get there. Many people long to be different, but lack that “something” that will make the difference. They feel alone and stuck in continuing cycles of pain, disconnected from life and love. But this doesn’t have to be you. There is a way to heal and learn to enjoy life in an ever-deepening way. My goal as a therapist is to help you do just that. In other words, my goal is to help you experience deep, lasting change.

I am trained extensively in CBT, ACT, IFS, EMDR, Somatic Experiencing (SE), MBSR, and Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy.
Life is beautiful, but not always easy and smooth. Dealing with life stressors and trauma can be overwhelming, exhausting, and even blocking individual's personal development in many aspects. Seeking counseling is courageous and self-compassionate way of positive coping. I am a somatic psychotherapist who combines traditional talk therapy and somatic approaches in treating mental health conditions, healing from trauma, and promoting self-growth.

I'm so glad you're considering counseling. It means that, at a deep level, you know you deserve better and are capable of more. You may be troubled by persistent negative thoughts and feelings, dissatisfied with certain important relationships, or frustrated that the choices you've made are no longer working for you. Either way, I applaud you for taking this step. Through psychotherapy, we will explore one of the most important subjects in your life - yourself. And we will journey together towards a future that reflects your deepest values and goals.

Behavioral adjustment, Brief Solution Focused, CBT, Coaching, Clinical Supervision and Licensed Supervisors, Person Centered, Mindfulness Based, Culturally Sensitive, Family Systems, Intervention(s)-Group(s), Structural Family Therapy, and Compassion Focused.
I have successfully taught children as early as those in Program Head Start, before becoming a Texas Teacher & School Counselor, and ultimately a LPC-Supervisor . As a child advocate who tries to understand the needs of the child in hopes of helping with mental or emotional turmoil. One may say or think that I specialize in treating children? This would be false, because I can't recall a situation where I could help the child without helping the parents, and even the whole family. Family history and dynamics plays a "Huge" role in your child's development and behaviors.

As an IFS-informed counselor, I specialize in working with childhood trauma through parts work.
I work with partners navigating the pain of infidelity, addiction, and betrayal—challenges that can deeply damage trust, but don’t have to end the relationship. Repair is possible. Drawing from the Gottman Method, I help couples recognize patterns such as constant criticism and contempt—clear red flags that erode connection. Using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), I guide couples in uncovering the deeper emotional cycles beneath their arguments by exploring both secondary and primary emotions.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
