Therapy is a partnership that grows in an atmosphere of safety and acceptance. It allows one to rediscover the parts of selves which may have been disowned; to learn new skills to handle grief and distress; to build healthier, more nurturing relationships; and to gain access to one's own direct experience of the world. I nurture this collaboration with clients and recognize that within each of us there exists a deeper wisdom that, given adequate support, naturally moves toward healing and integration.

I know what it feels like to be stuck, repeating the same behaviors over and over again. I know how it feels to say with all your heart, "I'll never do that again" - and mean it sincerely; but find yourself repeating that behavior again. I know how it feels to be in despair and hopelessness. I know how deep shame can run and how much it can control your life. I know what fear feels like and why it is embarrassing to admit that you need help.

My name is Shalanda, owner of TookesWilder Guidance. As a retired military spouse (24 years) and mother of four, I have been through many life and career transitions that can be stress and anxiety provoking. I see many women and they all come in with similar issues. So, I devote myself to encouraging and empowering women from the career moms to the stay at home moms. The biggest problem is we think self-care is selfish, but how can we take care of our loved ones if we are not taking care of ourselves?

It’s like there’s a door that won’t open, or you’re just treading water when you really want to move forward. That feeling can be especially hard to tolerate for us as high functioning ‘doers.’ Sometimes life taps us on the shoulder and says, “something needs to change.” You know that feeling of wanting to get unstuck? My goal is to help you bring your values, your dreams, and the stuff that makes you, you to the forefront as you create you

If you’re looking for a safe space to heal, grow, and/or transform pain into resilience then you’re in the right place. Emotions are part of being human, but you knew that right? Well, I also like to think of them as indicators. Emotional experiences aren’t without reason, oftentimes they’re trying to tell us something. Emotions can help us uncover valuable information about our needs, desires, and areas that may benefit from healing. I enjoy helping fellow humans make sense of their past, as they work on the present, to achieve sustainable change for a more fulfilling future. Understanding your experience matters to me.

I hold an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Sam Houston State University and have advanced training in the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, EMDR, and Sex Therapy.
I help empower individuals and couples navigating relational unknowns, stresses, anxieties, communication challenges, and/or transitions—slowing down, exploring what’s really going on, and making space for honesty and connection. I see myself as a form of an editor: you’re the author, and I am here to help notice patterns, bring to the surface what may or may not be serving you, and help you illuminate the story you want to be living.

At some point, many of us find ourselves feeling disconnected from our emotions, from our partner, or from the version of ourselves we thought we “should” be by now. Maybe you’re moving through life on autopilot, overwhelmed by anxiety, or caught in patterns that leave you feeling unseen or misunderstood. When everything around you feels heavy or unpredictable, it’s natural to wonder if things will ever settle. Your feelings aren’t dramatic or “too much.” They’re signals that something inside you is asking to be acknowledged with compassion, not judgment.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
