As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I have spent the last thirty years helping individuals, couples and families with feelings of depression, anxiety, relationship issues and family problems.
Therapy is a partnership that grows in an atmosphere of safety and acceptance. It allows one to rediscover the parts of selves which may have been disowned; to learn new skills to handle grief and distress; to build healthier, more nurturing relationships; and to gain access to one's own direct experience of the world. I nurture this collaboration with clients and recognize that within each of us there exists a deeper wisdom that, given adequate support, naturally moves toward healing and integration.

Additionally, I support parents through the use of a combination of Emotion Focused Family Therapy and Positive Discipline.
As lead therapist at Houston Therapy for Girls, I have extensive experience working with girls age 7-25 and their families, and my goal is to create an accepting environment in which girls and young women can gain self-acceptance and learn skills to help them negotiate some of life's most challenging years. I have ten years post-Master’s experience working with clients with four of those years spent working as a counselor at an all-girls private school. Having both attended and worked at all-girls schools, I have experienced first-hand the pressures and challenges girls face developing a sense of self in today's world.

For many, deciding to meet with a therapist is a big decision. Often times it is seen as a last resort. Talking to family and friends is not always the preferred way of dealing with a situation and that is when talking to a professional is something to consider. I have experience working with depression, anxiety, personality disorders, mood disorders, grief, PTSD, family dynamic problems, couples, parent-child relationships and more. I strive to help my clients learn the skills to work with whatever life throws at them.

Frustrated with doing it your way and getting no results? Not 100% sure that therapy works? No one in your family has ever gone to therapy? It's time you break through the stigma of going to therapy and change your life. Therapy is not only about what you give but more about what you get. You put so much time, energy, money, and effort into every other area of your life except where you need it most...on yourself! Life's difficulties can touch your family , marriage, work, relationships, and more. It is time you take your peace and progression into consideration. Be intentional about your purpose of making progress.

In our practice, we help youth overcome negative experiences, build coping skills, and help the family confidently rebuild/repair the strain in the family unit.
"No! "Mine!" "Leave me alone!" "I don't want it!" "Go away!" "I hate you!" Screaming, yelling. You hear this when raising a young child as well as a teenager. You know that some of this is okay; they are learning and growing. However, is all of it age appropriate? Their yelling is constant, their behavior is out of control, they are not following directions and their mood does not seem right. You feel frustrated, overwhelmed, concerned and nothing you do makes it better. You have tried disciplining, talking, taking away from them and used every tool you know but nothing has worked. You need help. There is something deeper going on.

I was raised in a very conservative family that belonged to an evangelical community.
Being loved unconditionally should be the experience of being in a family , some times this is not the experience if we are different in some way. Coming out as LGBTQQIA will be life changing and can be traumatic if we have to chose between being our authentic selfs or being disowned.

At the heart of the therapeutic relationship is connection! My passion is working with all types of individuals, believing that on the inside we have more likeness than differences. Together we explore individual and family history and establish goals for therapy. I provide them with education and support to take the steps towards desired change. Some know they have a substance use problem, others aren't sure, and still others have been affected by the disease of addiction throughout their childhood and/or adult relationships.

Contrary to popular opinion that can characterize therapy as designed for unhealthy or dysfunctional people, my experience and belief is that therapy is for people seeking to improve their lives and their relationships. Whether it is a relationship with ourselves, with a spouse, partner, family or friends, many of us long for better connections and more empowerment in our lives. The good news is that we can learns skills to live more satisfying lives. Research on brain plasticity validates that we can change. Research also suggests we tend to do what we have already done, whether it works or not! Therapy can change this!

Issues I commonly help with are family of origin problems, dating, premarital issues, infertility, pregnancy & postpartum issues, codependency, and mood disorders.
Your decision to start the journey of healing is a tremendous act of love turned inward. In individual counseling, I provide support and encouragement as you rewrite your story and work toward creating the life you want. In the couples therapy process, partners learn to improve communication, build intimacy, and solve conflict in a respectful way. All of my sessions are trauma sensitive and will be a safe space for healing.

The Adulting Program for young adults with ASD includes individual therapy, family meetings, and daily check-in to help with the transition to adulthood.
I work with children, adolescents and adults on a variety of issues. Most of my work is based on the principles of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). My therapy plans are goal-oriented, with specific, measurable steps so that you can track progress. I will help you discover the "problem behind the problem" and then we'll work together to formulate solutions. I enjoy collaborating with my patients on many types of issues, but have quite a bit of extra training in working with children with ADHD and their parents, as well as with persons with Asperger's-type autism.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
