My postmodern holistic orientation allows me to incorporate a wide array of therapy models, including humanistic, postmodern, psychoeducational, emotionally focused, and mindfulness therapeutic techniques.
I am a relationship counselor with a specialization in high-conflict couples. Most people enter relationships with rose-colored glasses and soon find themselves in an unwelcome conflict cycle. Constant criticism and contempt ( Gottman) are red flags in relationships. I can help track the conflict cycle (Emotional Family Therapy by Sue Johnson) by connecting/contrasting the secondary and primary emotions. It's not about the content of the argument rather it is about connections and safety in the relationship. Understanding the fear of abandonment and attachment styles is the key element in restoring security in a relationship.

I have specialized training in Trauma and Grief Component Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotionally Focused Family Therapy, Somatic Experiencing Therapy and am passionate about staying up to date with evidence based interventions.
Growing numbers of adolescents, adults, and families are dealing with issues stemming from anxiety, depression, lack of connection, finding purpose, grief, and loss of control in an ever-changing world. Therapy can look a lot of different ways, but most importantly it is an hour of time dedicated to getting to know yourself and building a meaningful future.

As a certified Emotionally Focused Couples therapist, I love working with these clients - together we face the challenges that have strained the relationship, and understand the issues that have corroded trust and complicated communication.
Often clients think, "We love each other, we just fight too much." "I need help learning how to communicate my emotions." "I want this relationship to work, I just don't know how to get over the affair. I want to trust again." Is this you? Are these words you've said? Are you living in fear and pain, and desperate to find your way back to your partner and to a relationship that feels healthy and fulfilling?

I primarily draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy ( EFT), somatic psychology, and relational psychodynamic work.
You’re just tired of getting hurt. You keep ending up in relationships that drain you, where you give too much, stay too long, or feel like you’re constantly walking on eggshells. Eventually, you lose your voice, your boundaries, your peace. You may find yourself asking: Why do I attract emotionally unavailable people? Why am I so anxious even when things are going well? Why can’t I trust myself? This isn’t about fixing you. You’re not broken. But you are tired… tired of pretending you’re okay, tired of over-explaining your pain. You want to feel grounded. You want relationships that feel like home, not like survival.

If clients want or need to go deeper to effect change then therapy can be more emotionally focused, or relationally focused.
I am very understanding and allow clients to work at their own pace in resolving their problems quickly and give them the tools to face future challenges. I enjoy clients who want to work and change. I have more than 30 years of experience in what works with people to get them going again to resolve life's trouble spots or help someone who has had trouble their entire life, and everyone in between. It is HARD to take the first step of getting help but a skillful experienced psychologist CAN help, so write me or call.

In addition to traditional talk therapy to glean how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors inform your process, I use mind-body awareness, emotionally focused therapy and provide psychoeducation about the neuroscience of trauma to help you understand, identify, and achieve optimal well-being.
I believe that everyone has the capacity to accomplish their goals. My role is to help you uncover and understand the obstacles and trauma that are getting in the way of achieving what you desire, and then help you tap into your inner resources to succeed. With empathy and authenticity, I work alongside my clients to promote healing and discovery of their power to change. Whether you are experiencing symptoms related to anxiety, depression, grief and loss; problems with relationships, parenting, or self-esteem; or a general sense of disconnectedness – whatever it is – I recognize that therapy is self-work, and it's not easy.

You may feel stuck right now; you may think it's over. That's normal you've been trying very long with poor results. That's courage! Don't let the conflict, the fighting, the infidelity, etc. dictate the future of your couple.

Though I am knowledgeable in several types of therapy, my preference is a combination of trauma-informed, emotionally focused therapy that is strength-based and person-centered.
Acknowledging that you need help and reaching out for it takes strength. Though this decision can feel like an overwhelming one, know that you are not alone in your quest to relieve the overwhelming burdens you carry. I believe that each of us has the capacity to heal from past trauma, to overcome adversity, and to achieve the change we want in our lives.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
