How to find the right counselor? is a question I often hear. First, you would want to find a counselor who has training with your areas of concerns. I work with adult clients and my primary specialities are anxiety (panic attacks, excessive worry, physical symptoms, sleep problems) OCD and trauma/grief. I use evidenced based methods, such as CBT,
EMDR
and ERP. Second, having a good therapeutic relationship is as important as using the right treatment method in order to make progress in therapy. We will take a collaborative approach with defining your counseling goals and planning your progress.

At Home Body Counseling, Sarah Shelton uses somatic-based therapies -
EMDR
, Brainspotting, and Somatic Experiencing - to help clients increase body awareness, capacity to manage distress, and release trauma.
Sarah Shelton created Home Body Counseling for those looking to feel more calm and connected in their body and relationships. Feeling daily anxiety, overwhelm, immense grief, and pain makes it hard to be present, know ourselves, enjoy our lives, or relate to others. Because our bodies hold onto past experiences, it's important we use our body for healing in therapy. Being able to slow down, witness, and show compassion for our emotions and feelings is how we begin to release accumulated stress from our bodies to become more regulated and find relief. This is your invitation to feel at home and calm in your body, your life. Welcome.

You are having a conversation with either your partner or parent that does not go the way you want even after preparing for it in your head. Numerous conversations on the same topic go nowhere. You often times think, “Is it me”, “Am I overreacting”, “I can’t do anything right.” Their comments are lowering your energy and you often times feel like giving up on the relationship. You find yourself wondering if you should tell your friends again because you are afraid of what they will think about your relationship. I hear you.

I want to get to know you, wherever you'd like to start. Together, we can explore ways to increase your ability to manage and cope and find more happiness and calmness. I've got 30 years of experience helping people navigate through the impact of traumatic situations and serious grief and loss, including sexual assault, domestic violence, abusive childhoods, chronic illness, and tragic death. I understand the crushing weight of hopelessness and thoughts that things will never be better or even different. I know that things can and do change and I strongly believe that we are not simply what happened to us.

Therapy is a journey and not always the easiest to embark upon and just showing up is half the battle. As a therapist it’s my job to gently guide you through this process. Developing a therapeutic relationship is the cornerstone of the work of therapy. In the first few appointments I will get to know you and the various problems that have kept you from reaching your goals. From there we will work together on reaching positive goals. I enjoy coffee, college sports, my dogs, travel, and collecting mechanical watches.

I am also trained in
EMDR
, which is a powerful way to move past distressing memories and beliefs.
There are times when we experience a lack of emotional balance in our life, which can appear to be accompanied by stress, confusion, a sense of hopelessness or disconnection from families and friends. Challenging and sometimes scary, these moments provide a unique opportunity for self-discovery. My belief is that people have the potential to heal, reinvent themselves, and make meaningful life changes. I have learned through my own life experience how struggles can open a door into a deeper aspect of self, leading to a better understanding of what was missing.

Change can be difficult - but with support it becomes possible. You might be struggling with difficult thoughts like "what if my family never accepts my life choices - will they ever accept me?" Perhaps you're battling indecisiveness and fear about whether you're "good enough" to succeed, preventing you from reaching your aspirations and goals? Or maybe you feel confident and successful at times, but at other moments as if your shield for taking on the world is paper-thin? I utilize methods including
EMDR
(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help resolve these concerns.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
