Following this interest led me to study and train on EMDR therapy, which can be amazingly effective at resolving past issues, helping to leave the past in the past.
I am a provider of professional counseling services, utilizing EMDR therapy and traditional psychotherapy to help with whatever you choose to work on (trauma, PTSD, divorce, relationship issues, substance abuse/dependency, life changes/transitions, depression, anxiety, childhood issues, etc.). I began my clinical work at Austin Recovery, working with individuals facing addiction and the many issues underlying addictive behaviors. During this work, I developed a strong interest in helping individuals deal with past traumatic experiences and negative life events.

At Home Body Counseling, Sarah Shelton uses somatic-based therapies - EMDR, Brainspotting, and Somatic Experiencing - to help clients increase body awareness, capacity to manage distress, and release trauma.
Sarah Shelton created Home Body Counseling for those looking to feel more calm and connected in their body and relationships. Feeling daily anxiety, overwhelm, and grief makes it hard to be present, know ourselves, enjoy our lives, or relate to others. Because our bodies hold onto past experiences, it's important we begin there to help us feel, care, and heal. Being able to slow down, witness, and see all parts of ourselves is how we begin to unburden and release stuck energy from our bodies to become more regulated and whole. This is your invitation to feel at home and at ease in your body, your life. You are welcome here.

Using evidenced-based tools like CBT, the Gottman Method, and EMDR, we will create a tailored treatment plan where your voice leads, and your experience inspires.
It often feels like your past is a relentless companion, never truly letting go. Even in moments of happiness, there's this looming darkness that follows you, casting a shadow over everything you try to embrace. Part of you knows you need to confront wounds from the past, untangle its' grip, and finally heal. But you are terrified of what might surface if you do, scared to open the floodgates to that pain. You have carried it for so long, and even though it's not ideal, it's familiar. After all, you have reached the point where you can't ignore those unresolved issues. It's clear something needs to change in your life.

My primary approaches include EMDR, Attachment-based psychotherapy, ego state therapy and CBT.
I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, relationship issues and trauma (including unresolved childhood wounds). Many of my clients come to therapy not knowing what exactly is holding them back but know they are not satisfied with the way things are going and are ready for something to change. Understanding how our past impacts our present is often very empowering; I am able to help you examine how your past experiences play a role in your present day life, as well as, provide the necessary treatment to alleviate/reduce the negative impacts.

I am also EMDR trained and use this modality with both children and adults depending on their need.
My main goal as a counselor is to provide a non-judgemental and emotionally supportive space where one feels safe, accepted, and heard. I want to help individuals in their journey through healing, and that process begins with trust, genuineness, and empathy.

A child’s behavior is telling a story of what is going on inside. Many times, when our kids are reaching out for connection, they will behave in ways that create the opposite response. When a child is struggling to find positive ways to relate, our team of therapists come alongside them and their family to help them feel more understood, empowered, connected and loved. I believe in conducting therapy in partnership with families, pediatricians, teachers, and other specialists to ensure that each child receives a personalized treatment plan that is reinforced in all settings.

Are you the oldest adult child that experiences anxiety and feel like it's your responsibility to rescue others? Is your family one of the last places you can confide in your struggles because of the trauma and PTSD you've experienced? It’s important to acknowledge all the shit you’ve been through and that life isn’t always about getting it right. Despite facing numerous challenges, you're strong but don't fully believe that. Even when luck hasn't been in your favor, now you're prepared to engage in profound self-work.

I utilized modern evidence-based therapies including EMDR, DBT, CBT, and mindfulness.
As a busy and hard-working individual, you want to see results from your investment in therapy. Perhaps you've had the disappointing experience of spending months and even years attending weekly sessions but making little progress towards your goals. Maybe you're tired of band-aid solutions that never seem to get to the root cause of your difficulties? Maybe you already have friends to talk to, so how is a therapist different?

I am a trauma-informed therapist who is trained in EMDR, an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders.
The path from growing up quietly queer in a small Midwestern town to living as an out lesbian in the 4th largest city in the country has informed my work within the LGBTQ+ community. I believe that knowledge is an integral part of building acceptance and pride in oneself and the community, and I am eager to continue working with people in all stages of the coming out process. Most recently, my focus has been on HIV prevention and treatment; I am passionate about working with clients who are at high risk for exposure, entering treatment, or working to maintain viral suppression.

I am certified in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART).
A therapist is like a dentist. We can avoid them for a while, and sometimes we find one we like or don't like. Eventually, though, everyone needs to see one. Therapy won't solve your problems, but it will help equip you with the tools you need to get through. We offer in-person and video sessions, and see children to adults. We have several groups available, and we accept insurance and offer a sliding scale. We believe therapy is for everyone. Contact us for a free consultation. Even if you don't end up seeing a therapist with our practice, we can help you find someone that you connect with.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
