When no one is judging—not even you—what stirs inside you? What longs to be lived? Therapy invites us into that second, often hidden reality, the one behind the labels. Words like “depression” or “anxiety” might describe your pain, but they don’t capture your full humanity. You carry a story, not a diagnosis. In our work, we listen to that inner world with care, until meaning, self-trust, and a renewed sense of aliveness begin to take root.

I utilize different techniques to focus on three major systems that affect our mental health: the system of the body (trauma informed care, biofeedback, emotional mapping), the larger system of the community of origin (attachment, IFS) and the even larger system of culture and politics (how do your identities shape the way you see the world/it sees you?).
Howdy! Congrats on beginning your counseling journey! One of the biggest predictors of success in counseling is the strength of the relationship with your therapist. My style is equitable and focuses on that relationship, with previous clients saying that my humorous, warm approach to therapy put them at ease quickly. This fast ease paired with my constant devouring of new research creates consistent and powerful results for my clients, often soon after beginning. There is no power hierarchy here: I bring an expertise in mental health and you bring an expertise in your life. We need both for a successful counseling experience!

I help clients develop a deeper connection with their bodies, enabling them to better understand their emotional and physiological responses to life’s challenges. By exploring how the brain and body work in harmony to navigate life’s complexities, we empower ourselves to make more intentional and confident decisions. My approach integrates cognitive behavioral therapy to address the mind and polyvagal theory-informed techniques to engage the body. Together, these methods provide a comprehensive path to growth and success in overcoming life’s obstacles.

Optimize Mind Care specializes in QEEG ("brain mapping") and Neurofeedback ("brain training" or EEG biofeedback).
Neurofeedback is a non-invasive technique that helps clients control their brainwave activity by replicating brainwave patterns that enable the brain to function optimally. Feedback is given to the brain via a movie, video game, and/or music, which is usually relaxing and enjoyable for clients.

Have you tried therapy and felt that you were not being heard, seen, and/or judged? Would you benefit from a therapist who provides consistent feedback and at times will challenge you to shift your perspective? Are you someone who is looking for a therapist with evidenced based approaches that also lean into nontraditional practices?
Within my practice, there is a heavy focus on grounding, mindfulness, challenging unhealthy thought patterns and re-parenting of the inner child. I truly believe that everyone's journey is meant to be their own and learning from each leg of that journey leads to self actualization and healing.

People have a desire for peace of mind and solutions from their problems. Many feel helpless and have been held hostage by their own situation. Not all situations require you to be in therapy for years. I’m interested in cutting through the clutter, identifying the problem(s), have you look into the accountability mirror when needed, and putting real tools in your toolbox. In the end, I hope to help you develop a stronger mental & emotional muscle.

My name is Dr. Caleb Stephens, and I am an Intersectional Clinician. The reality of therapy is that it is inaccessible to most, and the majority of therapists gear their therapy around themselves, and not around the needs of the client, nor the layers of identity that exist. I am not a traditional therapist, as I am also a community organizer and educator.

Can biofeedback help with anxiety?
Biofeedback is often used to treat anxiety, including generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Anecdotal evidence and some research studies have found that it can improve symptoms of these disorders, sometimes significantly; however, studies on biofeedback have typically been small and researchers have cautioned that many have significant limitations, such as limited follow-up or a lack of a control group.
Is biofeedback evidence-based?
There is some evidence that biofeedback can effectively treat certain conditions; for example, its efficacy in treating headaches and urinary incontinence is generally thought to be well-established. There is also promising, but less conclusive, evidence that it can aid in stroke recovery or help someone manage a mental health disorder such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD.
What is the difference between biofeedback and neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback that measures brain activity specifically; it is typically used to treat psychological or neurodevelopmental concerns such as ADHD, depression, insomnia, or autism spectrum disorder. Biofeedback is a broader category that, in addition to neurofeedback, also includes electromyogram, heart rate variability, and thermal biofeedback, each of which measures a particular physiological function (muscle activity, heart rate, and skin temperature, respectively)
What are the limitations of biofeedback?
While biofeedback may be helpful for certain conditions, its efficacy is less assured for others, such as high blood pressure. People with certain health conditions such as heart arrhythmia may not be able to benefit from biofeedback because their condition may interfere with the machines’ readings. Biofeedback can also be time-consuming and costly, and may not be covered by health insurance.
