Sometimes it can feel like we’ve gotten lost in the narrative or that we are a supporting character in someone else’s story. Daniel believes wholeheartedly that the stories of our lives are ours to tell, to transform, and to interpret, though we may need some help getting back in the driver’s seat. We can learn to play new roles, as well as put aside those that no longer serve us. Daniel has experience working with substance abuse groups, groups of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, adults with autism , as well as with individuals navigating a myriad of issues such as anxiety and depression.

In 2021, the CDC reported that 1 in 44 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. This number had been on the rise for years, and with it the demand for quality autism therapy services. Parents of children with autism are seeking services that will help their children thrive more through increased independence, communication, living skills, and improved advocacy. Early intervention can improve learning, communication and social skills, as well as underlying brain development, so parents need these services as soon as possible.

“I should know how to do this. Everyone else seems to fit in”. Living with Autism is so much more complex than it seems. Whether it's in a store or at a school you’ve become hyper aware that you just don’t know what to do. “Am I saying the right things”? What if they misunderstand me”? Desperately wanting to make a connection, but not knowing how. Feeling overwhelmed because there is so much happening. Not knowing who to talk to or which particular words to use. Nerves leaving you frozen. Your confidence is shot and it's clear that you really need help from someone who can help make a plan.

I've worked with a variety of patients and consider my specialties to be: psychotherapy with adolescents and young adults; psychological testing including cognitive testing; autism and ADHD assessments; and working with individuals on the autism spectrum who are high functioning.
As an experienced psychologist, I've come to believe that change is most likely to happen when a client and therapist can form a strong therapeutic alliance. Throughout my career, I've seen such alliances produce remarkable results for patients and their families.

My services include psychological and psycho-educational assessment for children and adolescents. This can include assessment for psychological concerns, such as hyperactivity, inattention, anxiety, depression, and Autism . Assessment for psycho-educational concerns involves intellectual testing (or IQ), which examines cognitive processes, as well as achievement testing to investigate reading, writing, and math. Through Psycho-educational testing we can investigate academic concerns, such as learning problems and dyslexia, as well as developmental concerns, such as intellectual and developmental disabilities. We offer counseling too

Neither my work with clients nor the SSP has anything to do with trying to “fix” autism or ADHD, as if that were possible.
Hello! Your visit to my page is a courageous first step in your healing adventure. My name is Jeff. Zeigler. I am supervised by Dr. Paul Jurek (L1121). I am a neurodiversity affirming therapist serving clients in Texas. I enjoy working with autistic adults, ADHDers, or AuDHDers (people with both autism and ADHD, like me). If you have anxiety, depression, or abuse/trauma-related issues, I’m here to help. In addition, we can work to improve your self-esteem, and address masking and imposter syndrome.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
