Everyone at times experiences negative emotions such as sadness, anger or anxiety , but when these emotions become constant companions it is often a sign that something has gone awry. By the time we come to psychotherapy, the task of altering these emotions may feel difficult or impossible to navigate alone. As a psychoanalytic/psychodynamic therapist, I am interested in how your early relationships impact your relationships, personality, perceptions and coping mechanisms. Through the therapeutic process, I aim to help my clients gain insight, learn new ways of relating and implement change in order to heal, grow and flourish.

I help individuals who are suffering from severe anxiety / depression, and also people struggling with major life transitions. Does your lack of motivation and absence of energy make daily living difficult and almost unbearable? Depressive/Anxious symptoms can be frightening and overwhelming. You feel trapped, lost, and uncertain as to how to move forward and you feel guilty because you cannot seem to just “get it together” and the effort to try is truly exhausting! You are not sure what the future looks like and you are hoping nobody recognizes your inner struggles you are dealing with daily.

I have experience working with young and wise adults on issues such as depression, anxiety , decision-making, problem-solving, establishing boundaries, and strengthening communication skills.
There comes a time in our human experience where life seems to come at us fast and cause imbalance. Often times, we struggle to re-gain that balance. We begin to feel stressed, overwhelmed, and frustrated. It may become difficult to express ourselves, maintain friendships, spend quality time with loved ones or do something as simple as getting a good night’s rest. It is during those times that we must summon the courage to seek professional help to navigate through those feelings in hopes of finding our balance.

Great parents and great teachers struggle every day feeling like they can't help their kids figure out how to behave and survive their everyday life. They spend day after day fighting, yelling and being exhausted, and having nothing change. Their kids have dysregulated bodies that make them anxious, hyperactive, and sometimes even aggressive. My goal is to help these kids learn to calm and control their body and to help their adults to support them in doing this. I specialize in supporting kids with dysregulation disorders such as autism, anxiety , oppositional defiant disorder, sensory processing disorder, ADHD, and trauma.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
