Are you struggling with eating? More than that, are you struggling with what it’s like to be you when you’re eating? The negative thoughts and painful feelings can be overwhelming, and you’ve stumbled onto behaviors and habits that help you manage them. But those same behaviors and habits have taken a toll. Maybe you've been trying to turn it around for a long time. You haven't failed, even if you’ve been at this for a while. I’ve learned that eating disorders are stubborn, and sometimes a new approach is what's needed. I want to offer you a new approach that can help you leave this struggle behind.

The goals for Gott man method couples counseling are to disarm conflicting verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; remove barriers of stagnancy; heighten senses of empathy & understanding within the context of the relationship.
Relationship difficulties do not define a relationship. Mental health challenges do not define an individual. They are natural hu man trials to be experienced. I have over a decade of knowledge as a research investigator in psychology to assist in your counseling journey through experiences. I approach the hu man condition as if we contain natural resources, yet to be mined, to achieve full potential in life and relationships. There’s optimism in hu man nature and it contains hope to aspire towards greater self-understanding. Once a person becomes more self-aware of his/her behavior, it’s possible to change or adapt for the better.

Difficult memories, trauma and similar stressors can erode our sense of safety and stability. One may be left feeling numb, isolated, empty, misunderstood or unable to connect, or as if a mask is always on. One may feel always on alert or feel guilt for not “getting over it.” My message is: you are not alone! Whether a vehicle collision or relationship challenges, big secrets or hurricane, trauma and distressing events can impact our ability to cope. When you feel overwhelmed & vulnerable and your support systems don’t feel like enough, seeking outside help is the courageous next step.

My office staff and office colleagues have practiced together for many years and are very sensitive to the needs of our patients.
As a psychologist with over 30 years experience, I have particular interest in working with individuals with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, college and work stress, phase of life issues, gay/lesbian struggles, marital/divorce problems and general relationship issues. My expertise has allowed me to be highly effective in quickly understanding the needs of my patients, to help facilitate an effective treatment plan. Generally, individuals begin to feel better with progress often seen after a few visits. The length of time spent in treatment will be mutually agreed upon, based on the presenting problem and its complexity.

I have experience helping individuals adjust to major life changes such as grief and loss, depression, anxiety, chronic illness, anger management, and other issues individuals encounter.
How can therapy help me with my problems? That is a question I am sure a lot of people ask themselves when considering therapy. One of my philosophies in life is that although we cannot always control our experiences and circumstances, we can choose our responses to them and delve into how they affect and influence us as hu mans. Presence is essential. I understand that I cannot change any individual other than myself, but I can act as a vessel or catalyst by truly understanding myself to help another person. My goal is to create an environment where you become the best you as possible by looking into all aspects of your life.

LPC (Texas) over ten years. My focus of therapy is cognitive (talk therapy). "I accept you for who you are and where you are at in your life, with no judgment." Currently, I have over ten years of experience in both private practices, inpatient hospitalization, and Intensive Outpatient groups. I am a Client-Centered Therapist using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Brief Solution-Focused Therapy, and both can be modified depending on your individual needs. One of the therapeutic approaches I use is to assist you in nurturing your inner strengths that you may not be aware exist. Counseling is a collaborative process.

I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families. I believe in addressing a client's immediate concern, their current functioning, and their identified goals. I use a variety of treatment modalities and select those that best serve the needs of my clients. I do not believe in meeting with clients indefinitely. My hope is to help clients reach their goals and get to the point where they no longer need therapy. I believe in teaching my clients the specific skills they need to address their problem or concern.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
