Virtual Sessions Available at this time so openings for Adolescents and Adults.
My primary focus is trauma work. People often get stuck in the past unable to move on due to painful memories, flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts. Even when they are not thinking about the trauma, the body remembers and they struggle with emotional regulation, interpersonal skills, and being stable in their life. Trauma work can bring balance.

I offer in-person counseling in Gun Barrel City and virtual sessions across Texas for teens and adults.
To everyone around you, your life may look “perfectly fine” from the outside. But sometimes the life everyone else sees isn’t the same one you’re truly living. Maybe you’ve been treading water for longer than you can remember. Maybe you’re replaying conversations and planning for every possible outcome. Or maybe you’re the one making sure everyone else has what they need and no one is mad at you. You probably seem “just fine”...but are you?

I work with teens, adults, and older adults in Texas and offer individual therapy.
I work with people who feel overwhelmed by trauma, substance use, stress managment, anxiety, depression, and the weight of trying to move forward when it feels like nothing is going right. You may be dealing with cravings, guilt, shame, old survival patterns, or relationships that have been strained by what you have been through. Maybe sobriety is just the start, and now you are trying to rebuild trust, break habits that keep pulling you back, and create a life that feels more steady and worth living.

Attending a session with a counselor for the first time can be daunting. Anxiety abounds with the fear or hope of improving one's emotional life. We will focus first on building the relationship together in a non-judging, empathetic and caring manner that eases that anxiety. Many of us know that we are in need of relationship building with those we interact with, in our family, workplace, social setting, romantic interests and within marriage. We will work together to repair and practice connecting and communication skills needed to facilitate safe rewarding relationship habits.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I believe the counseling process is much like a journey and is a collaborative effort between the therapist and the individual, couple, or family. My counseling style is dependent on the needs of each unique individual and their goals. Therefore the counseling process will be different for each person, but my role as a therapist, to guide and encourage, remains the same. In the first few sessions, we will work to discover where you would like to go on the journey and continue when you are proactively committed to getting there.

Often, there is a point in life where we are unhappy with the status quo: our relationships are confusing and don’t satisfy; conflict seems inevitable and we aren’t functioning to our God-given potential. Perhaps that is why you are here, searching for a therapist. I understand that it is scary to start therapy but I will do my best to make you feel safe and comfortable. My approach is pretty simple. Most us of have patterns of thought and assumptions that were instilled in us as children, patterns that we don’t know how to change. Beneath that, lies the paralyzing fear that we can’t change.

Trauma hurts. It can be sudden, life-altering and overwhelming, or chronic, subtle and nearly unnoticeable, but either way it can change the way we think about others, the world, and unfortunately, ourselves. Dealing with the aftermath—changes in our relationships, lashing out toward self or others, feeling nothing and/or everything all at once—is sometimes as hard as the initial event, especially when society, friends and family and our own minds tell us to “just get over it.”

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
