I help teens and parents who are going through big life changes like divorce, co- parenting , launching into adulthood, or other changing changes at home, to take a breath and develop acceptance for what’s going on around and within them, so they can feel confident about their ability to navigate hard things.
Your bright spirited child has now become a remote, disconnected teen. You feel like you don’t know what’s going on with them. They spend so much time in their room you feel like you haven’t seen them in weeks and anytime you ask a question, all you get is a one-word answer or an eye roll. Sometimes you’re even scared to knock on their door! You feel like your teen has developed headphones as an extra body part, and you can never tell if they even hear a word you say. You knew this was coming. Things do change as kids get older. You understand that, but more often than not, it feels like you’re standing on quicksand.

I am currently not taking new clients due to the death of my spouse, in the fall of 2020. It may be 6 months or so, before I can welcome individuals, couples, teens and children having difficulty adjusting to change in their life. I work with all ages: grandparent, parent , young adult, and children (K-12). I have compassion for the struggles that life's journey may bring you. In fact, my tagline is "helping you, along 'life's journey' ". My primary area of counseling is grief and loss of any kind, with adjustments to daily living and re-establishing purpose and meaning.

In a blink of an eye, you're now a parent of a tween/teen(s). Your child has become w/drawn, negative, loss of interest & enjoyment of activities they once enjoyed. There's a change in their sleep, eating habits, doing poorly in school, isolating from friends and family, showing risky or harmful behaviors, even possible suicide thoughts. Your child shares with you that they feel depressed, anxious and don’t want to go to school. You try asking them what’s wrong, just to be yelled, “nothing, you wouldn’t even understand. You turn to your partner for support just to find yourself feeling angry, emotionally overwhelmed, invalidated.

I am available as a Guardian ad Litem, Parenting Facilitator, Family Therapist and Individual Therapist for adults, teens, and children.
I have 17 years specialized training & experience in body-centered psychotherapies, working with trauma, post traumatic stress & moral injury. Neuroscience confirms trauma resides in the body; we know the body's wisdom guides the release of trauma perfectly with adequate safety, effective "witnessing," & mindful inner attention. Distressing thoughts, beliefs & social inhibition are the primary barriers to the body's ability to release trauma & re-wire the neurological system in a transformational process that decades of "talk therapy" could never accomplish. These powerful, highly effective interventions assure the debilitating effects of trauma are no longer something people must "live with."

If children came with instruction manuals, parenting would be so much easier; but they don’t, and being a parent is one of the most difficult jobs in today’s busy world. As a parent , I understand how difficult it can be to manage, teach, and help your child overcome adversities to reach his or her potential. When your child struggles, your teen lashes out, or they are crippled with anxiety, you may feel frustrated or overwhelmed… or both. As a professional, my passion is helping parents and their children, tweens, teens and young adults through life’s challenges--to feel competent to handle their lives.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
