Symptoms are signals received from both the conscious mind from various sources throughout the body, an indication that something is wrong. By avoiding theses indicators, clients with extending and spiraling issues are able to address symptoms that would otherwise end in a complex and convoluted crises. Obviously our weaknesses and issues, such as anger, insecurity, fear of intimacy, and/or the need to control are expressions of a wounded child within. Much of society has been wounded through abuse or dysfunctional families. Unresolved conflicts tend to carry-over into our adult functioning.

We can't control a pandemic, we can control how we respond to it. I focus on you. What works for one person doesn't work for everyone; I don't believe in a cookie cutter approach to therapy. I use a client centered approach with cognitive behavioral strategies, and mindfulness. My process helps you resolve personal conflicts or challenges, acquire more adaptive problem solving and communication skills, change behaviors, or manage anxiety, depression or life changes, like divorce or career changes. I believe in helping you get through the process as efficiently and with as little pain as possible.

I'm a relationship therapist who helps people learn to heal disagreements & enjoy being together. People are social creatures. We are meant to be connected. The problem is, we are sometimes not very good at communicating what we need/want. We misunderstand, misspeak & have unconscious reactions to triggers. We react out of fear, anger & pain. In short, misunderstandings & reactions get us into a world of hurt! My job is to slow everything down-to think about problems differently, look for patterns & help find the "why" under the "what". We can work to redefine relationships as safe/dependable & build new ways of being together.

My style is a heart centered/spiritual approach that helps guide people to their answers. Heart centered counseling is an effective and compassionate way of being with you. Have you ever looked at your reflection and wondered who you are? Do you ever feel lost or wonder where you are headed? Confession- I have. I realized later in life that my calling was to become a therapist. Long before returning to college, I received on-the-job training through my own experiences as a mother, wife, friend, and as an individual struggling with depression and anxiety. These experiences helped prepare me for my role as a therapist. Just like my clients, I looked for a therapist to talk to, one who would listen and be able to understand where I was coming from.

Testimonial from a former client: "Susan's approach to therapy is grounded in real neurological and behavioral science. With some past counselors, I've often been put off by vaguely new age "feel good" sessions that never sought to address the actual underlying illness. Susan has helped me to identify why I reacted or interpreted something in a certain way, and how to catch myself from repeating those thinking traps. I feel great, my family has never been happier and my work life has soared to new heights."

Counseling has been, and continues to be, an important part of my life and a vital reason I am who I have become. I chose counseling as a profession because I wanted to help others in the same way I have been helped over the years. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at the University of Texas at Austin in 2004 and a Master of Arts in Counseling at St. Edward’s University in 2016.

BlueCross BlueShield Therapists
BlueCross BlueShield insurance provides coverage for behavioral health services in Georgetown. BCBS HMO-style plans cover in-network providers while PPO plans provide a benefit that can be applied to either in-network or out-of-network providers. Blue Cross Blue Shield may not require a referral from your primary care practitioner for covered behavioral health services.

Some BCBS Therapists in Georgetown only have room for a few insurance slots in their schedule, so it's important to confirm in-network availability when you book your first appointment.

Blue Cross Blue Shield companies are independently owned and community-based healthcare insurers. BCBS is the largest health insurer in the US, covering 110 million members in 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Nationwide, more than 1.7 million health care providers contract with Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies.

Here’s a link to more information on how insurance works to cover behavioral health benefits.
