I have 20 years of experience working with children and adolescents who are diagnosed with ADHD , Asperger's Syndrome, Bi-polar & Major Depressive Disorder, Attachment Disorder, and PTSD in a residential treatment setting and private practice.
My focus in counseling is to help you through the process of change. I also work with individuals and families who are looking to improve relationships, work through depression, stress, grief, trauma & PTSD, anxiety, abuse, anger, addictions, and other challenging life situations. EMDR is used to help clients "reprocess" traumas and other disturbing life events to help clients move beyond the negative emotions and dysfunctional thoughts that are connected with the event.

My expertise in school psychology, OCD, chronic health conditions, autism, ADHD , Tourette's and its triad, and combinations of these issues, and experience in a medical system give me a unique understanding of the struggles your child is facing.
If children came with instruction manuals, parenting would be so much easier; but they don’t, and being a parent is one of the most difficult jobs in today’s busy world. As a parent, I understand how difficult it can be to manage, teach, and help your child overcome adversities to reach his or her potential. When your child struggles, your teen lashes out, or they are crippled with anxiety, you may feel frustrated or overwhelmed… or both. As a professional, my passion is helping parents and their children, tweens, teens and young adults through life’s challenges--to feel competent to handle their lives.

I have experience working with a wide variety of populations, specializing in helping adults who struggle with depression, anxiety, bipolar, ADHD , or substance use.
Have you ever looked at your reflection and wondered who you are? Do you ever feel lost or wonder where you are headed? Confession- I have. I realized later in life that my calling was to become a therapist. Long before returning to college, I received on-the-job training through my own experiences as a mother, wife, friend, and as an individual struggling with depression and anxiety. These experiences helped prepare me for my role as a therapist. Just like my clients, I looked for a therapist to talk to, one who would listen and be able to understand where I was coming from.

My experience includes working with adults and adolescents who have dealt with ADHD , depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders.
While each client has unique needs, my approach is Person-centered and Humanistic. I typically use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing techniques; however, I have an eclectic approach overall. I sometimes draw interventions from Brief Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I also believe it is important to be multifaceted since therapy is not one-size-fits-all, so therapy will be an assimilation of different techniques that are catered to client needs.

Based on my 25 years of experience, I usually recommend a holistic and objective assessment of the problems as part of the solution. These assessments include understanding, first and foremost, the needs of the individual. These can include anxiety, depression, ADHD , peer issues, family problems, stress, and many other things. I treasure the insight the individuals bring to the conversation with their questions, concerns, observations, and overall experiences. I bring these understandings to my therapy sessions and welcome those involved with the individual to lead the individual towards a more passionate, kind, fulfilling life.

"I wish I had done this years ago". The harsh reality is that emotional struggles to this day continue to be stigmatized and shamed. The brain is an organ, and like any other physiological system and it can require some fine tuning from time to time. Whether you or a loved one have been under the grips of anxiety, depression, difficulty sleeping, or simply sub-optimal functioning, we can have an open, honest discussion about whether medication is the right answer. Throughout my 14 years in psychiatry, I've had no greater joy than to see my patients improve. It's never too late to get better.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
