There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to counseling. Every unique individual has their own specific needs when it comes to healing from trauma, dealing with chronic illness/pain, overcoming anxiety, and growing in resiliency and self-compassion. My hope is to provide a safe space where you can share your stories, struggles, and hopes for the future as we engage the brain and body in a way that allows for healing to begin and relief to be found in order to take steps toward a brighter future. There is always hope.

It is an honor to witness and explore someone’s internal world — being present to explore the hurt, pain, excitement, and success. Life is difficult and always changing, and it’s important to have a place where you can explore life’s delicate and complicated ups and downs, both past and present. I work with adolescent and adult clients for individual counseling. Specializing in woman, life transitions- teens from high school to college, entering challenges of adulthood, marriage, parenthood.

I'm a bit of a jack of all trades when it comes to therapy, and I haven't found a client that I couldn't work with yet! I can work with a client who knows exactly what they want out of therapy, and I can also work with clients who aren't sure of how to move forward. I make sure that I will only work as hard as you do, so I love working with people who want to be pushed to make progress. For me, as long a client wants to come to therapy, I will do what I can to help you.

I provide therapy to individuals, couples, and groups as we work together to free ourselves from the struggles and suffering that keep us from living our life to the fullest. At times our lives can feel unmanageable. Trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, unhealthy cycles, addictions, and other areas of our mental health can keep us stuck and unable to move forward freely. We start to lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel of our suffering. I am here to walk alongside you as we move toward that light. Through counseling, these issues can be addressed and freedom is possible as we work together!

I am an experienced therapist who specializes in counseling individuals, couples, and children over 10. Using a holistic approach, I strive to create an environment that is caring and safe, where you can feel empowered to reach for your personal goals. These are my areas of expertise: I work with adults and children suffering from anxiety using research based strategies such as CBT and Mindfulness. I also specialize in working with persons with trauma, helping them come to terms with and heal from their past. Using a Jungian theoretical orientation, I also work with persons who seek therapy as an opportunity for personal growth.

We live in a world where we are expected to do it all, perfectly, and without struggling. We are constantly comparing ourselves to others and we declare ourselves "not good enough." These feelings tend to dictate our response to those around us, so that we are really just reacting to what is going on behind the scenes without even realizing it. I believe that a lot of the issues that present on the surface -- family issues, addiction, depression, and anxiety -- can be treated by focusing on overcoming shame, negative self-talk, and trauma. If this can be done, then the chances of improving your quality of life increases.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
