It has been a challenging time for most of us. No one seems immune to emotional issues related to depression, anxiety, grief, or relationship challenges. Sometimes it is a struggle to manage relationships and everyday life circumstances. Distressing events can cause additional problems to crop up at work or home. We can also be challenged in areas of financial distress and our world view. As a Licensed Clinical Social Work Supervisor, I have the opportunity to assist individuals and families in developing strategies for becoming their best selves, as well as shape new clinicians in best practices for this important work.

You are worth knowing, deeply and fully. There is SPACE for you. You have a purpose, and there is a reason you’re here. But you may be struggling to see your value and purpose right now. You might feel like you’ve tried everything, sought wise counsel, read all the books, and are at the end of your rope.

Do you sometimes feel as though you are trapped in your own head? Do you feel disconnected from the present moment, unable to experience profound connection, relaxation, and joy because you are dwelling on the past or worried about the future? Have you worked through difficult past experiences in traditional talk therapy, but still feel as though your problems continue to linger? If you found yourself nodding while reading any of these questions, you may have unresolved trauma affecting your nervous system. Using gentle, nervous system-centered techniques, I can help you process and integrate those difficult experiences.

Too often we find ourselves stressed out, burned out, overwhelmed, and flat out tired. All too often, we seek an "escape" to temporarily solve our problems, which only leads us to seek out the same or similar outlets to give us a boost, many of which are more damaging than helpful. What's more, many of us are only brushing the surface of a bigger issue left unresolved. If you're ready to manifest lasting changes in your life and seek healthy, safe, alternative methods to mental health recovery, you are in the right place!

How did it come to this? There’s a distance growing in your marriage, but you’re the only one willing to admit it. You repeatedly try to talk about it with your husband, but every time you do, he becomes defensive or brushes you off. “Why can’t he just listen and try to understand how I feel?” You’re so frustrated you want to scream! It’s painful to feel like you’re the only one making any effort. Sometimes you wonder if it’d be easier to just give up on this relationship altogether. But you’re not ready to throw in the towel yet. You know things could be better if only you could start communicating again. But you don’t know how.

In my counseling work, I am guided by the belief that one of the greatest gifts we can offer others is our willingness to sit with them in their suffering. During my graduate training and professional experience, that belief evolved into a deeper calling. To meet others deeply, we must deeply meet ourselves. As a counselor and an individual, I strive to cultivate the acceptance, presence, and self-awareness needed to sit with my own pain as well as the pain of others. My passion for counseling is rooted in the hope that through genuine connection and compassionate support, clients can feel empowered to embrace their own healing.

Many of my clients often appear to be managing well on the outside but feel overwhelmed, stuck or disconnected inside. They may be navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief or a major life transition. Many are professionals, service members or first responders who are used to carrying responsibility and putting others first. They come to therapy because what once worked no longer does. They want relief from stress, a deeper understanding of themselves and practical tools to feel more balanced, grounded and aligned with their values and goals.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
