My typical counseling approach, and that of my colleagues at Homestead Hope Counseling Services, is anchored firmly and unapologetically in the Christian world-view. We do so with a clear, unwavering theistic paradigm that acknowledges God's sovereignty in all things, as He is intimately interested in, and responsive to, each person and all they experience. Therefore, unless otherwise directed by the client, our approach will inherently involve the use of biblical revelation and the principles found therein, when ever appropriate and applicable. The Christ centered world view is paramount to my approach to healing.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with people in diverse situations including families dealing with struggling students, women who are battling depression and anxiety, individuals who received a difficult medical diagnosis, and people walking through a season of trauma and
grief
.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a manual to help you navigate the difficulties that come in life? As nice as that would be, we are uniquely different and each of us deserves help in a way that makes our unique story feel seen and heard. My hope as a counselor is to provide a therapeutic session that provides compassion, healing and direction. I have spent the last 20 years in education and counseling. In addition, my husband and I have been in full time ministry for 30 years.

As a professional counselor, I have training and skills that decrease the effects of stress and trauma. I work to increase clients' well-being while helping them develop and understand who they are and can become. Clients who benefited from working with me sought help for:
grief
, the stress of a service or healthcare job, understanding the intersection of their mental health and faith, and increasing satisfaction in areas of their life outside of their profession.

Life has a way of bringing us to our knees at times. It can seem impossible to navigate the emotions and losses that come with being human. We often increase suffering by judging emotion negatively or attempting to avoid it altogether. It doesn’t have to be so. I’d love to help you learn to process emotion in a way that fosters acceptance and healing. I specialize in working with adult individuals struggling with
grief
, anxiety, OCD, body image, life transitions (ie: college, parenthood, divorce, spiritual deconstruction), and caregivers of children with special needs. I work with clients from religious and non-religious contexts.

My years of experience prepared me to deal with issues related to marriage, family conflict,
grief
, divorce, self-esteem, substance abuse, trauma and much more.
The year we have all had has been unprecedented. People who have never sought mental health services before are finding themselves in need of emotional support and therapeutic intervention. People are dealing with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts as well as a multitude of life stressors. I have worked in mental health services for the past five years and saw firsthand how the pressures of today are causing individuals and families to find themselves at odds with their own world view. Some want answers on how to get to a new form of normalcy. It is clear that the world has changed and what worked before, may not work now.

Common issues I assist clients with include: making desired change (anger management, substance abuse, reducing distress due to depression/anxiety); and assisting clients to navigate significant life transitions (terminal illness,
loss
,
grief
, aging issues, incarceration/re-entry, medical decline, and acceptance).
I am a CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) practitioner. My primary goal as a therapist is to assist clients to reach their goals and to maximize happiness/well-being through making cognitive and behavioral changes. My secondary goal is to assist clients to have the necessary tools and skills to be their own therapist/self-help expert. I have been practicing, and studying the philosophical roots of, CBT since 2007. From 2007 to 2017, I worked as a CBT practitioner within the criminal justice system. During that time, I earned my Masters Degree (2016) and became licensed in Texas (2017).

I am not currently accepting new clients until July 2023. I enjoy working with adult couples who are in need of rekindling their fire that used to burn bright. Some of the reasons for this dimness stem from miscommunication, lack of intimacy/issues surrounding intimacy, or
loss
of trust due to infidelity or sex addiction. I am also interested in working with individuals, along with their significant other, who are experiencing difficulties fitting into gender norms and are wanting to explore their true selves.

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
