Over the past several years, I have been blessed to witness and guide the healing journeys of many women and families recovering from the effects of trauma, abuse, life stress, and grief and loss. Intrusive thoughts about what happened, outsized reactions to normal life stress, relationship issues, and anxiety and depression are normal reactions to what happened to you then, but they no longer serve you now. As a trained and experienced trauma counselor, I can help you heal without the blaming and shaming messages you might have heard in the past from well-meaning friends, family, clergy, or even counselors.

People generally come to therapy because there is some area of their life in which they are stuck and in pain. I practice from an “attachment” perspective which is the key to unlocking a different way of understanding yourself and your interactions with others, opening a pathway to practical and relational healing. My office is a no-blame/no-shame environment. I provide both traditional talk therapy as well as Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) to individuals (age 8 and up), couples, and families just 20 miles SE of Dallas. Because of my experience as an adoptive dad, foster and adoptive families are a focus of my practice.

You know that saying “Never judge a book by its cover”? Well, I can honestly say that the cover of my book does not match the pages! The pages in my book of life have not only taught many life lessons but has equipped me with knowledge and experience to connect with ALL people. Because some of my pages were not all filled with butterflies and sunshine, she's done the work to find ways to help equip herself with daily coping skills I'm happy to be in a place to share my experience with others through therapy, life consulting and women courses. Let the next pages of your life consist of healing, growing and being true to thine self.

I have 25 years of psychotherapy experience successfully helping people improve their lives. Talking about problems can be difficult, however, sharing concerns with an objective, professional therapist enables you to understand and overcome challenges. I treat you with respect, understanding, and confidentiality, and provide exceptional services in a comfortable and non-judgmental environment. I have a wide variety of professional experience with children, teens, and adults, in both short and long-term therapy, dealing with a broad spectrum of problems. In addition, I provide diagnostic assessments and consultations.

Have you looked in the mirror and asked yourself, "How did I get here?" “Who can I trust?” “How did my life change so quickly that I can't even recognize myself anymore?" "Am I Crazy?" "I Want to be Happy?" Problems are just the tip of the iceberg. Real problems start and end with the mirror image we see daily. Often the mirror image is silent but dying to speak and live life again. Issues in life start with the inability to be heard, believed in, and understood. I believe the best way to find you again, is to find your voice.

Now in-network with BCBS! I am so glad you stopped by my profile! As a trauma-trained mental health counselor, I have 11+ years working with children, adults, & families. A great deal of my experience comes from working with a diverse range of mental health concerns in inpatient & intensive outpatient psychiatric care. The reason I decided to specialize in trauma was due to the recurring, underlying theme of trauma experienced by the majority of the patients with chronic mental health concerns. Of course, trauma is not always indicated: many people seek therapy to help manage their current season of life.

Are you tired of feeling stuck, anxious, or like you are not enough? Did you know that you do not have to keep on living that way? If you are tired of feeling depressed and isolated, it is time to do something about it. Making the decision to come to counseling is the first step toward getting unstuck. Brené Brown says, “You either walk inside your story and own it or you stand outside your story and hustle for your worthiness.” Coming to therapy to process past hurts and current struggles is a great start to walking inside your of your story and owning it instead of hustling for your worthiness- an endless endeavor.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
