I am specialized in treating child/
adolescent
issues: ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and behavioral issues.
I endeavor to help my clients to identify their existing strengths and develop resilience with my specialized knowledge and clinical expertise. In the beginning of counseling, my clients will have a clear understanding of where they are emotionally, relationally, and spiritually, which lead them to work on specific goals in the working stage of counseling. Therapeutic interventions will include adjusting thought/behavior patterns (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) to intensify their strengths to overcome crisis. I have successfully worked with the clients who struggled with behavior issues, parenting issues, substance abuse, addiction, PTSD, and trauma-related issues.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Registered Play Therapist and EMDR Certified. I am passionate about working with parents who want to strength their relationship with their child by learning new ways to connect and understand their child/
teen
. My practice is focused on working with the entire family system. Many times parents seek services for their child. When they come to my office, we work on helping the parent be a partner in the healing process. My approach is different than other child therapist because I involve the parents in every step of the process and encourage them to be the parents that they want to be.

Making the choice to seek counseling can sometimes be difficult. The thought of becoming vulnerable can evoke several questions and anxiety. From everyday stress and feelings of being overwhelmed to important life transitions and events, anyone can benefit from counseling. Throughout the process of exploring barriers, you can achieve emotional health. During counseling, I believe it is necessary and effective to incorporate rational thought processes, as well as utilizing emotional and behavioral components. This directive approach can result in feelings of empowerment and self-understanding.

Perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed, depressed or just need someone to listen and help you problem solve. I don't know you yet, but I do know that by taking this first step in seeking help, it shows that you are resilient, determined and not willing to give up. By seeking counseling, you understand that you don't have to remain where you are. I provide therapy to
adolescent
and adult individuals, couples and families. Some of the more common issues are depression, suicidal ideations, self-harming, anger management, anxiety, conflict resolution, divorce, parent/child relationship issues, and marriage counseling.

In the midst of difficult times and challenges, we find opportunity. I believe that the moments we are pushed out of our comfort zone allow for personal growth and healing. I pull from several different approaches including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I find that this creates a unique counseling experience for each client and provides a collaborative environment to explore.

As a therapist I believe the individuals I work with are the experts in their lives. I create a therapeutic space that renders mutual respect and honors personal decision-making. Regardless of the situations or life experiences that bring you to me, I believe you will find the answers within you as I help nurture and guide you. Therapy can be long-term or short-term based on your individual needs. I believe in goal-oriented therapy. I enjoy providing individuals and families concrete evidence-based tools that they can take with them, and incorporate in their lives long after their participation in therapeutic services.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
