SAME WEEK APPOINTMENTS MOST WEEKS. Hi! I'm Christy Graham, Founder of Acorn. Our christian therapists work with complicated families and situations, bringing in family members and other professionals to help effect change for clients. We focus on helping the systems already supporting your family be more effective. That translates into great skill and comfort working with schools, child care agencies, and courts for the benefit of my clients. Our clinicians have specific training in different modalities of trauma informed care [DBT and EMDR] and court informed treatment including reunification counseling and parent facilitation.

As a therapist, I work collaboratively with clients to establish an authentic connection and set a safe and respectful space for clients to explore whatever it is they bring to the therapeutic setting. We will work as a team towards treatment goals tailored to your needs in order to bring awareness to issues, acknowledge and accept the emotions that arise, and develop coping skills that are helpful and realistic to utilize in real life. I value a holistic approach in therapy and strive to understand and empathize with your specific human experience. My therapeutic style is designed to meet my clients wherever they are.

I provide on-line individual therapy and have been a Licensed Professional Counselor for over 25 years. I specialize in working with clients who are struggling with depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. These clients are often intelligent, creative and sometimes feel overly sensitive to the world around them (i.e. loud noises and/or crowds make you anxious or just dealing with people feels overwhelming). People who are good at taking care of others but are struggling with “burnout”. I help my clients identify the causes of their emotional distress; find healthy coping skills for better emotional regulation and focus on self-care.

Sometimes the reasons for our struggles are clearcut; sometimes all we can identify is a sense of discontent or feeling stuck; and sometimes our feelings or behaviors seem to come up “out of the blue”. Whatever the struggle, receiving care, support, and an external perspective can be a way regain understanding, balance, strength, and direction in our lives. My goal is to understand your struggles, as well as your strengths and gifts, and collaborate with you to find ways to maximize your potential and well-being.

Something has to change. You're barely staying afloat, constantly battling that sensation of drowning - flat out being overwhelmed. You find yourself blowing up, zoning out, walking away or even crying...for no reason. You try to hide it with laughter and sarcasm, constantly hearing yourself say "I'm fine," but barely able to keep the mask in place. You look at your marriage, your kids, your career, your friendships and all you feel is resentment, guilt, maybe even fear. You don't want to "waste the time/money" but you wish someone would just listen to you, for once.

Therapy can feel intimidating, especially in the beginning. I believe it's vital to build a collaborative and authentic relationship with all of my clients. In treatment, I primarily utilize a Gestalt theoretical perspective, which focuses on increasing clients’ awareness and self-understanding, so they are better able to navigate life’s difficulties in ways that feel genuine to them. I also enjoy integrating mindfulness techniques into work with clients of all ages. My specialties include anxiety, trauma, relational and attachment concerns, and parenting. I enjoy working specifically with people on the autism spectrum.

Growing up I always answered the question of “what do you want to be when you grow up?” with “child psychologist.” I am not quite there yet, but I love my current title of therapist. I have been working with adolescents/children since 2010 when I first began teaching children with Autism and doing in home behavior therapy. I have worked in Juvenile Justice for over 5 years and love interacting with kids/teenagers and their families. I also enjoy working with adults to help with whatever obstacle life throws our way.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
