My journey to becoming a counselor started from a young age when I realized I felt things on a deep level... or at least cried more than the other guys! For a long time I struggled with my sensitivity, thinking less of myself for lacking the control to ignore or suppress my feelings. However, over time I found that my sensitivity allowed me to empathize with others on a unique level, and that in owning and sharing my feelings, others felt more comfortable to do the same. As a result, it is my aim to provide individuals a safe space to share their struggles and develop tools to feel confident in their ability to cope with life.

I know what it’s like to be a client. I know how scary it is to trust a stranger with some of your darkest thoughts and deepest secrets. That’s why I have a slightly different approach with each of my clients. As a counselor I have all of the education, training, experience and state approvals to help each of my clients. But before I can help them, I prefer to allow my clients to show me where they are on their journey. To describe their struggles and ensure I understand what’s troubling them the most. Then we work together to meet their health, personal and professional goals, while addressing any new issues that may arise.

Traditional talk therapy doesn't always give us the results we want, especially when working with trauma. I work best with clients who prefer a direct approach and have been trying to heal from trauma for a prolonged period of time without a lot of results. I found that spirituality is an important part of the trauma healing process. To me, spirituality looks like connecting with nature and the earth and expands beyond the traditional perspectives. Trauma often comes with addictions and I do not take the abstinence-only perspective on addiction and tend to emphasize harm reduction as an alternative.

Everyone, wherever they are on their journey, wants “better” – better relationships, better feelings about self, satisfaction in life – and we try so many things but often come to places where we feel stuck or see ourselves repeating similar patterns. You may be adept at moving on after walking through difficult circumstances, yet this time your “bounce back” doesn’t seem as strong. Making change in one's self can appear difficult, especially if we cannot see for ourselves what needs to be changed. Change can be exhilarating, liberating and an adventure, not an arduous task of “what’s wrong with me?”
