Making the choice to seek counseling can sometimes be difficult. The thought of becoming vulnerable can evoke several questions and
anxiety
. From everyday stress and feelings of being overwhelmed to important life transitions and events, anyone can benefit from counseling. Throughout the process of exploring barriers, you can achieve emotional health. During counseling, I believe it is necessary and effective to incorporate rational thought processes, as well as utilizing emotional and behavioral components. This directive approach can result in feelings of empowerment and self-understanding.

Reaching out takes great courage, especially when someone is seeking guidance. Life has the tendency to cause people to cope in ways that are not necessarily beneficial. They may develop problems like depression or
anxiety
as a result of stressors. Or, they may turn towards abusing substances as a way to change how they feel. Reaching out for help during this time may be scary and seem impossible. My goal, as a therapist, is to come alongside my clients so that they don’t walk alone through whatever may be troubling them. I hope to be able to help anyone struggling to deal with life on life’s terms.

I am a Trauma Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapist and I treat
anxiety
, depression, grief, trauma related symptoms, relationship, behavioral and occupational problems.
Our history and the things that have happened to us do not have to be LIFE Sentences. We may remember what has happened to us, but we don’t have to re-live what has happened to us. Life Events shape and create our unique perspective on how we live, work and love, and sometimes we need tuning up. If you are anxious or depressed, then you may not be able to see life's potential stumbles ahead of you. I believe that we experience patterns/cycles of negative thoughts and behaviors which require management and redirection. The trick is to see in advance when conditions are ripe and ready for faltering and what to do about it.

Anxiety
, depression, ongoing stress, and grief have a way of isolating you. Perhaps you are feeling lonely or despondent and wondering if you will ever feel better. There is hope and you do not have to walk this road alone. We all need connection, to feel loved, to feel safe, to be heard and understood. Counseling can be the springboard for healing and change. It can also feel scary because we are challenging ourselves to share our
fears
and our pain with another person. Lori understands this and will meet you with grace and compassion where you are and create a safe space for you to explore your struggles.

I work with children, teens, and adults with issues related to self-esteem,
anxiety
, and depression to help them build resilience and feel empowered as they navigate difficult emotions and circumstances in life.
Does your inner-critic scream when you make a mistake? Do people seem to like you more than you like yourself? Maybe you just feel lost, wanting things to be different even though you don't know exactly what that means. That’s okay. Life can be challenging, but challenging is not impossible. Sometimes, we just need some support. I would like to offer you my support in a space where you can feel free to be who you are, free from the pressure of who you're supposed to be, and free to discover what's important to you. Let's work together to identify the changes you want to make in life so you can work on making them.

Depression and
anxiety
are often the byproducts of emotional distress we experience when we are disconnected from others.
We often get stuck in life attempting to solve problems the same way over and over. Once we get caught in this pattern, especially in relationships, we begin to argue over how we are fighting instead of working through relationship barriers. I want to help you learn new skills that will allow you to break problematic cycles and find new ways to connect with others.

We all have our ups and downs in life and sometimes life can feel really harsh when we least expect it. Thoughts and memories from your past may be intruding in your current life. In therapy, you will learn to stop the
panic
, stop the racing thoughts, feel less sad and process the parts of your past that continue to effect you today. I work collaboratively with individuals, drawing on techniques, like EMDR and sand tray, to assist you in moving beyond the symptoms of your struggles to uncover the underlying causes of “stuckness” or suffering.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
