The clients that work best with me are ready to identify obstacles that are preventing them from living a fulfilling life. I guide my clients to empower themselves and be survivors, not victims. I assign frequent homework and will not work harder than you. I will most often tell you what you don't want to hear, in a loving, kind way. I use a variety of treatment modalities in any given session. I also have extensive knowlege and resources regarding the 12 steps. If requested, I can counsel from a Christian perspective.

Life Navigation Counseling was created to offer a deeply personalized and integrative approach to trauma recovery. At its core is the belief that healing is possible when the nervous system is supported with compassion and evidence-based care. Our practice specializes in treating the lasting effects of trauma—including PTSD, Functional Neurological Disorders (FND), Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES), chronic pain, auto-immune issues and addiction—through a “bottom-up” methodology that begins with nervous system regulation.

My therapy style is fluid because I don't think there is a one size fits all way to do therapy. I like to give patients the freedom to communicate if something is not working for them. I like to build a healthy rapport in order to challenge patients without feeling threatened or judged. Patients can expect an open space to process what they need without judgement. Patients are welcome to ask questions and get to know me before we jump into their history and together we will explore what goals they would like to achieve.

I enjoy helping people solve problems. They happen to be very personal problems, but thats what counseling does, solves problems. Whether its the recent loss of a marriage, a death of a loved one, or concerns about the way you may be using substances. I have conversations with people so that we can see things a little more objectively and identify some paths forward. So, if your struggle to solve a problem involves excess worry and anxiety, mood, or a phase of life from college students to older adults - I might be able to help you feel better and look at some new options to solve that problem.

I got my Master’s degree in Counseling from Southern Methodist University, specializing in substance use and working with the LGBTQIA+ community.
Have you even felt powerless? Maybe you’ve felt it in a relationship, or in your family, or at your job. Maybe at times you've felt powerless against your own mind. I believe that there’s a deep well of power that exists inside you. All you have to do is find it and reconnect to it. I would be honored to take that journey of self-discovery with you. You are far more powerful than you know, and I hope to help you explore your power.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
