I am a psychologist who is board certified in
sleep
medicine. I treat
insomnia
, virtually any sleeping disorder, and circadian rhythm disorders, in children and adults. I use evidence based medicine approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy of
insomnia
(CBT-I), CBT for anxiety and depression, and IRT for nightmares and PTSD. I directed the
sleep
disorders center at Children's Medical Center and the
sleep
medicine fellowship program at UT Southwestern Medical Center. CBT-I is rapid and efficacious for treatment of
insomnia
. CBT is also time limited for anxiety and/or depression. IRT works rapidly for nightmares.

I work alongside adults and teens, treating anxiety, chronic stress,
sleep
problems, history of trauma, and/or co-occurring medical conditions. Most of us don’t recognize the ways in which we might be holding ourselves back, whether it be due to anxiety, our relationship with food, or beliefs that we have taken on from others. I’ve seen firsthand the transformation that is possible when you get out of your own way.

Even now, life is much more manageable when
sleep
is soothing and restorative.
Times are changing fast - take inventory - of what you have and what you know. Be clear and calm about what you do not know. Yet. This will help. The goal is to respond - not react. You are resourceful. Look through the listings. Plenty of qualified people are available. Talk to some of us. You will get a better idea in a few minutes on the phone than by visiting dozens of websites - and I have a very useful website. My clients range from doctors to artists, from students to people becoming more engaged students of life. Let's talk about how you can become more wisely engaged in your life. We will find our way through this crisis.

I offer individual psychotherapy to address issues such as trauma, depression, anxiety, chronic illness and pain, or
insomnia
.
I am not accepting new clients but I DO HAVE OPENINGS in my online classes for
sleep
and chronic pain. Have you found yourself asking why you feel down when things around you seem to be going so well? Do you sometimes feel disconnected from the joy you once felt, and are now overwhelmed by just moving through your day? Sadness and worry can be difficult to manage on the best of days, and even harder when you can't quite put your finger on what has you feeling out of sorts. Working together, we can get to the bottom of what's troubling you and develop new strategies and solutions to the questions that are distressing you.

I have trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and CBT-I for
insomnia
, Mindfulness, and Self-Compassion.
I have a few openings for new clients in August 2023. My aim is to help you address problematic ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving by way of examining the ways in which you perceive the world around you. The goal is to assist you in reaching a position of appreciation for your genuine self (for you are the perfect you!) and an acceptance of the events that occur in your life. I would be honored to take part in your journey of discovering the narratives which potentially distort reality and lead to discomfort, diminished self-worth, or other barriers to attaining contentment.

You are more than a body. So when your body is struggling, it makes sense that you would also struggle mentally, emotionally, socially or even spiritually. I can help you through this. I am a clinical psychologist with leading expertise in providing psychotherapy to individuals dealing with health concerns (high stress/tension, coping with illness, disease or disability, fear of progression/recurrence, reducing physical symptoms, body image/changes, impact on relationships, communicating with loved ones, coping with depression, anxiety, or isolation, spiritual distress, enriching meaning, or even support facing end of life).

Human Settings Institute, LLC
CMT, CCH, CH
Our clients almost always come to us because they feel "blocked" by something inside. Something prevents them from moving forward, and they don't know what it is. We show them in the first session exactly what the brand new fMRI research shows is stopping them from change and how we will overcome it with hypnosis. Stress, fears,
sleep
problems, chronic pain, sexual problems, depression, bad habits, addictions, all result from the fact that our subconscious mind is out of tune with our conscious desires. Hypnotism is uniquely qualified to address that very quickly, without months and months of talking with no results.

I provide evidence-based treatments for ADHD using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), to help improve
sleep
/
insomnia
, (CBT-I) and teach strategies to compensate for their cognitive weaknesses (cognitive rehabilitation).
Neuropsychological evaluations can be helpful at any age. If you are struggling with your thinking abilities (attention, memory, or executive functioning), you may benefit from diagnostic clarity (is it ADHD? do I have dementia?). Testing can identify a pattern of cognitive strengths and weaknesses and help guide in treatment planning.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.
Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.
Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.
What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
