EMDR is a scientifically-validated approach that is particularly good for individuals who have experienced a traumatic situation such as abuse, assault , accidents, or war.
Hello! I provide high-quality care to children, teens, and adults. I strive to help my clients to realize options, to determine satisfying solutions, and to create a plan for obtaining the kind of life they desire. I prefer to use approaches that incorporate somatic (body)- awareness, such as EMDR in order to target the entire nervous system. I enjoy helping people navigate life's transitions that accompany adolescence, young adulthood, career changes, marriage, and parenting. I was a psychology professor earlier in my career and so I often use education and coaching as a part of my therapy protocol.

My practice is almost entirely forensic, i.e. court/litigation related, civil and criminal. My main specialty is evaluating and treating individuals accused of sexual abuse or sexual offenses, child abuse, domestic violence. Some allegations are false, others are true. I find it very rewarding to turn around false allegations. My secondary specialty is consulting on child custody evaluations, or performing them if a private custody evaluation or social study is needed. I also provide domestic violence evaluations and counseling for family, immigration, CPS and criminal cases.

I specialize in severe abuse, sexual abuse , relationship & family issues, couple’s therapy, PTSD, ADHD & Anxiety.
CORONA VIRUS UPDATE: 1st, These are hard, stressful times! I’m sooo sorry we’re all going through this. I am seeing clients in person & via teletherapy. Unfortunately I do not take insurance but I’ve lowered my rate to $85 an hour to try and make therapy as affordable as possible. I’ve been in practice 15 years and have opened my service area thanks to Google Duo & Facetime. I became a therapist after doing my own work over 2 decades ago and yes, I still do my own work with a therapist. It wasn’t easy but it was definitely the best thing I’ve ever done for myself, my family & my friends. I hope I can help you.

Overcoming anxiety and depression and healing from sexual abuse can change your life.
Have you been holding back on therapy because you worry it will be boring or filled with a whole bunch of advice you don't want? Don't worry! Therapy doesn't have to be like that. In fact, I believe effective therapy should feel engaging and light-hearted. Don't get me wrong - therapy is hard work, especially when you have something traumatic to unpack. Together, we'll sort through those issues and work toward the healing you deserve while leaving space for creativity and playfulness along the way. We'll also be able to do so much great work all from the comfort and security of your home, which is why I love video therapy.

I support people of diverse backgrounds seeking to manage stress, depression/anxiety and heal from experiences of trauma, sexual abuse , and/or domestic violence.
Counseling is a space where you don’t have to pretend everything is okay or hide what you’re going through. You do that enough in other areas of your life. You do not have to repeat those patterns here. In counseling, all parts of you are welcome and all the things you have gone through can be talked about. My goal is to work together to reclaim your life through talk and connection by affirming your needs, identity and beliefs while urging you to make informed decisions about therapy.

Some of the areas of focus in therapy are depression and anxiety, relationship problems, self esteem, domestic violence, marital problems, stress reduction, behavioral problems in children, sexual abuse , and love addiction.
I believe that healing begins with a little guidance and a place where you feel safe to express yourself. I also believe everyone has the answers they seek within themselves and my job is to help you find them. Our relationship is a partnership where you set the goals and we work toward them together. Whether you are dealing with a specific crisis situation or wanting to focus on personal growth, therapy can help and you don't have to go through it alone.

Of note, I have extensive experience working with spiritual trauma, attachment, sexual abuse , and emotional manipulation.
My clients have typically been told messages about themselves, their world, and their place in it. This may come from family, partners, institutions, or ourselves. Even knowing it isn't "logically" true sometimes isn't enough. These messages compel us to old ways of coping that are self-defeating, limiting, and harmful. No one should be put in such a bind, and my passion is in helping individuals overcome these challenges. I am LGBTQ-affirming, ENM/kink-informed, and social justice oriented. I affirm Black Lives Matter, Abortion is Healthcare, and Science is Real.

Looking for change? Having hope that some things could be different? I think change is possible and know that it can be really difficult when you might not know where to begin. Maybe you have been feeling lost, stuck, or overwhelmed, avoiding emotions until they get too big to ignore. Maybe you just want to know yourself better. Your feelings are valid and the change you want matters. It’s possible to find a sense of direction and reconnect to yourself and others. Therapy can be a space to explore your questions, concerns and navigate how you want to move forward to live the life you want.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
