I believe we are formed by biology, family, friends, diet and job stress - which influences our thoughts, self esteem , and perfectionism. I aim to create a safe, accepting place for clients to talk about their deepest concerns and worries. I help clients determine what is important to create change, and together we work to develop the skills for that change to happen. Clients who truly fit with my style desire to release self doubt, guilt, worry, and feeling "never good enough." It is in the context of this accepting relationship that the client begins to feel genuinely worthy.

I enjoy helping my clients empower themselves to live the lives they wish to live, develop self-compassion, & embrace peace, frequently with the help of my therapy dog, Rockstar. I believe many stressful behaviors (e.g., isolation, eating disorders) begin as a way to cope, when we feel we have little control. Even if certain behaviors are now causing you distress, it is amazing that you empowered yourself to manage times in your life when you didn't know how else manage. Now, we can figure out new strategies that not only allow you to survive, but to thrive, in a way that allows you to feel peaceful & free.

It is not always easy to check in with ourselves. And when we do, the most common question is, “Is this a safe space?” As your therapist, I take pride in cultivating safe spaces to process whatever comes up for you. I enjoy working with African American Women and Men struggling with stress management, anxiety, mindfulness, and self-esteem challenges because these are areas that require intentionality, and as minor as they may seem, can have a major impact on how we navigate the world.

I believe people want to live well, but often things happen that are out of our control. This can cause us to have difficulty managing stress, feel anxious, sad, empty, isolated, and even feel the effects on our physical body. My therapeutic approach focuses on providing a safe, nonjudgmental environment where we can work together to identify beliefs that make it challenging to live the life you really want. We will explore life events that may have caused barriers between you and your goals, and together work to learn effective skills to use outside of therapy.

Tu palabra es tu magia is Spanish for "Your word is your magic." I am a firm believer that our words carry immense transformative and healing power. Our words create our thoughts and our thoughts impact our behavior. If we can get to a place where we are able to control the type of intrusive thoughts we have, we can control the type of emotions we feel and change our behavior. You may find yourself struggling to quiet the chatter in your mind telling you you are worthless or not capable, or maybe it keeps re-playing fears of the future or haunting memories from the past. Let's help you retrain the brain and take charge of your joy!

I work with women navigating early adulthood and who are motivated to explore how their past impacts their present - including anxiety, self-esteem, and relationship struggles. My approach is not to focus solely on the symptoms that are being presented, but to understand each person as a unique individual, navigating the complexity that comes with being human. I believe we all have our own unique set of gifts and innate strengths, and therapy is a space that promotes growth in discovering those strengths that lie within.

We all can sometimes lose our way in a world that is overwhelming. Traumatic experiences and addiction can leave us feeling disconnected, trapped and alone. I have experience in working with teens, families and adult women. I have experience working in a school setting and know how beneficial it is to work with school personnel and build a collaborative team in support of the student. I have also worked in an inpatient & outpatient setting for substance abuse and addictive behaviors. I enjoy working in an individual and/or group setting. I hold a space where compassion, guidance, belonging and growth happen.

Areas of specialty include men's issues, substance abuse, addictions, self esteem issues, couples work, father/son relationships, dysfunctional family of origin work, anger resolution therapy, relapse prevention, physical/sexual/ verbal/ emotional abuse, and trauma/ post traumatic stress.
I take a very down-to-earth approach to counseling. By focusing on what is real and the truth of one's experiences, I encourage my clients to participate in their own recovery processes and to develop new behaviors that produce new results and better solutions. It is my personal belief that as a society we have developed a dysfunctional lifestyle based on fantasy and myth. We act on these false beliefs every day, keeping us stuck in old, immature patterns of reactionary behavior, instead of responding to life's challenges as adults.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
