Motivational Interviewing Therapists in Dallas, TX
I specialize in supporting Black and Brown clients who are navigating the emotional weight of showing up in spaces that weren’t built with them in mind. You might be the one everyone leans on—the strong friend, the caregiver, the achiever—but privately, you’re feeling exhausted, disconnected, or unsure how to make room for your own needs. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, family expectations, burnout, or the complex intersection of racial identity, faith, and emotional health—I offer a space where you don’t have to over-explain. I bring a culturally responsive, trauma-informed lens to our work, and I hold that space in reverence.

I am here to help with any related anxiety, depression and behavioral change goals. People can make better decisions if they have enough information, and they understand how their behaviors and thoughts and experiences impact them. Here are some aspects of counseling and therapy I believe and practice. Psychotherapy includes client’s active participation, involvement and commitment to recognize problems and concerns and changing behaviors and thoughts and feelings. Therefore, a client will probably have to work both in and out of the therapy session to address his or her concerns. There are no instant or painless or passive cures.

Hello. I am Gene Gibbs, a licensed professional counselor. I enjoy helping people deal with issues of anger, anxiety, depression, grief, addiction, and spirituality. I help people process their thoughts and emotions so they can make decisions that can get them to the emotional and mental place they seek. I work with individuals and with couples. I am a gay ally, and I encourage everyone to be willing to speak their truth. I ask my clients to identify their desired outcomes. We then craft a plan with objectives and interventions that will help them achieve their desired outcome.

The clients I work with are motivated for change. Most are in pursuit of emotional healing, richer relationships, greater confidence, and more joy in life. If you’re just beginning your therapy process, early sessions might involve deep self-searching to understand the underlying roots of symptoms, poor mood and destructive behavior. If you’re further along in your process, sessions can be aimed toward cultivating passion, refining skills and talents and elevating practices that lead you to feeling more alive.

I facilitated substance abuse and trauma groups for teens from 2013 to 2016. I come from a military family, where 9 of my uncles, my significant other, my brother and many of my cousins have served across all of the branches. I have a natural passion for veterans and helping them manage complex PTSD. I integrate evidence-based approaches like DBT and CBT to teach practical skills and coping strategies, while my work with couples focuses on emotionally focused therapy to strengthen connection and intimacy. For clients who acknowledge having a religious or faith orientation, I welcome that into the session as well.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists
How does motivational interviewing work?
Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.
Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?
Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.
How long does motivational interviewing last?
Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.
What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?
In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
