Sometimes life give us unexpected (or even unwanted) challenges that are much easier to successfully navigate with help and support. Living and thriving as a member of the LGBTQIA + community is a beautiful thing, but there can also be many challenges along the way that can leave their marks on us: struggling for self-acceptance or the acceptance of those we love, bullying and harassment, finding and expressing our authentic selves, feeling like we "fit", and having healthy and stable relationships. These challenges are in addition to mental and emotional challenges that are not specific to our community's experience.

My specialty training includes LGBTQ + Affirmative Therapy (SMU), Sex Therapist certification in progress (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors & Therapists / AASECT), Indigenous Circle of Wellness certification in progress (The So'oh-Shináli Sister Project).
To honestly know yourself is to pursue a lifelong journey of self-exploration, to gain a deeper understanding of oneself in the wake of life events, and, especially, to be willing to share with others who may be navigating a similar quest-- or even with those who are able to extend a great deal of empathy. This may be tough, scary work, but the rewards are invaluable, to put it lightly. You gain a deeper sense of freedom and autonomy to decide how you want to live, and truly become the author of your own story.

I am an affirming therapist for the lesbian , bisexual , gay , transgender , and queer community ( LGBTQ ).
You've been struggling for some time with being all alone in the world. You constantly have nagging worries that you will never find happiness or fulfillment. None of your friends understand what you are going through. It is so difficult to believe that things will ever get better. Close partners in your life abandoned you when you needed them the most. You try to move on, but you catch yourself thinking things like, “Am I attractive?” “Why don’t I feel good enough?” "What if I spend the rest of my life alone?" "What if I really am a failure?" The truth is, you deserve to live a life free of worry and fear. You deserve to thrive.

My counseling practice focuses on adults 18+, with a specialized focus on LGBTQ + populations. I am held by deeply spiritual beliefs to help my LGBTQ + community whenever possible. I also treat addiction, dual-diagnosis, spirituality, anxiety, gender identity, depression, divorce, grief and those who are recovering from religious abuse. As a gay man in recovery, I meet clients where they are in life and that is always my starting point while building a relationship to facilitate change.

There is no manual for the LGBTQ experience. People in our community often find themselves having spent their childhood trying to stay safe, only to reach adulthood without the skills and relationships to have the fulfilling life they deserve. We often feel like we are spending our lives playing catch up, trying to reclaim our past while living out our present and future all at the same time.

Have you been comparing yourself to others and frustrated with your own trajectory? Maybe you want to be hopeful but often wonder if the problem is you. Maybe you identify as LGBTQ + and are looking for an unapologetically affirming environment. You may even have a strained or difficult relationship with religion that is affecting your adult life. Making the decision to pursue therapy can feel overwhelming initially. Exploring challenges in life can be scary. All of your feelings are valid and you deserve an environment to explore and consider the areas that life doesn’t always grant us time to navigate.

As a queer person from a non-affirming religious background, I recognize how overwhelming it can be to unlearn internalized negative beliefs about ourselves.
Growing up, you had to deny parts of yourself in order to be loved. Maybe you come from a family, culture, or religion that rejected aspects of your identity, so you learned to repress or deny parts of yourself in order to fit in. In adulthood, you’re realizing you feel lost. Maybe you don't feel safe opening up or being vulnerable with others. Maybe you struggle with self-criticism or perfectionism. Maybe you feel like you’ve never had a real chance to explore your own sexuality or gender identity. On your hardest days, you might even question whether you’re lovable at all, or if maybe you’re too broken to ever fully feel whole.

Most of my experience has been working with adolescents and adults who are struggling with Gender Identity/ LGBTQ struggles, depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse, and “coming of age”.
I know how hard it can be to find a therapist with who you feel a connection with and I would be honored to work with you through the various stages of your life. As a Lesbian , I can relate to many of the challenges people face when existing in a difficult space. Whatever challenges you are encountering at this moment, there is hope. Things can get better. Things can change. You have more power than you realize. I look forward to working with you as you gain the empowerment, knowledge, and skills required to move through those challenges. Currently, I see clients in the evenings and Saturday mornings.

As a Gay Man, it can be difficult to accept oneself due to internal shame and living in a heteronormative society. We learned at a young age how to protect ourselves from stigma and discrimination by numbing pain, overcompensating, misusing substances, and in some cases living a dual life. These strategies once protected us, but now negatively influence our emotions, thoughts, relationships, and view of the world. I help Gay Men who are struggling with their sexual orientation, living in or out of the closet, living with HIV, afraid to disclose their status, in relationship conflict, and more.

Specialties include: BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color) Identities & Oppression; LGBTQIA + Affirming Care & Gender Affirmation Surgery Evaluations/Letters; Relationship Concerns; Shame & Self-Compassion; Fat Phobia & Acceptance.
Are you looking for an inclusive and culturally conscious therapist? Many of the concerns that clients bring up in therapy often involve challenges related to their identities (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, body size, etc.) and/or moving through a world that oppresses them. When describing their previous experiences in therapy, many clients have expressed things to me like, “my therapist just didn’t get me", and as a result, have been unintentionally harmed by assumptions or comments made by previous therapists. As part of my practice, it’s important to me that I hold a deep respect for your worldview and experiences.

I work in the LGBTQ + community; with recovering people; with families impacted by addiction; with those trying to break free of exploitation and and traumatic bonding.
Based in Phoenix, I work with clients around the country and the world as licensing allows, including via Telehealth. I'm so glad you're here. The world can feel like an inhospitable home at times. Relationships can be unsettled, self-medicating can dominate, and the past can haunt like a persistent familiar ghost. Healing is necessary, because you are necessary. No matter how you may struggle - there is no one else quite like you, you are the very best at being you, you possess gifts and magic that only you can bring to the world. Therapy is about coming home to yourself - your physical body, emotional body or heart, and mind.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
