Areas of specialty include men's issues, substance abuse, addictions, self esteem issues, couples work, father/son relationships, dysfunctional family of origin work, anger resolution therapy, relapse prevention, physical/sexual/ verbal/ emotional abuse, and trauma/ post traumatic stress.
I take a very down-to-earth approach to counseling. By focusing on what is real and the truth of one's experiences, I encourage my clients to participate in their own recovery processes and to develop new behaviors that produce new results and better solutions. It is my personal belief that as a society we have developed a dysfunctional lifestyle based on fantasy and myth. We act on these false beliefs every day, keeping us stuck in old, immature patterns of reactionary behavior, instead of responding to life's challenges as adults.

I work with clients who experience difficulties with depression, anxiety, grief, adjustment issues, substance use/abuse, relationship issues, family stress, trauma, and oppression.
Do you often find that you compare yourself to others? Do you want to stop unhealthy behaviors but have a hard time making change? Do you find yourself stuck in a cycle of unhealthy relationships, but you're not sure what to do about it? Maybe you struggle with setting and keeping boundaries with yourself and others. We all have limits in relationships that help us feel safe and connected, although sometimes it's hard to assert them. Many of us have been "trained" to ignore our own needs. What would it be like to work on making decisions in your life that truly benefit you and allow you to have healthier connections?

All too often, children and young adults are not given enough credit for how challenging this time of their lives can be. My ideal clients are school-aged children or teens working through life transitions. Maybe something critical is happening for them or maybe they are just trying to understand their dynamic emotions. I support children/teens and their families in navigating life's stressors. Further, as an educational consultant, I help families investigate and solidify the right educational environment for their children. School fit is crucial and I am their partner in navigating a pathway to success.

I am trained in EMDR, DBT, CBT, psychodynamic and family systems approaches.
Does this sound like you? No matter how hard you try, negative thoughts fill your head, swimming around, taking over your day. You try so hard, but everything you do feels wrong, imperfect, and uncomfortable. Sometimes you may feel full of energy and then crash or become tearful and sad or angry and irritable. Sometimes you may have nightmares or flashbacks or lose time just sitting and thinking. Perhaps you have felt this way and gone through the same behavior patterns your whole life. Or maybe, these feelings are brand new, and you have never felt this way before. For whatever reason, you are seeking help and I am glad you are.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
