You're not falling apart, you're exhausted from pretending you're not. Maybe you just went through a breakup you can't stop replaying. Maybe you keep ending up in the same situationship, wondering how you got here again. Maybe you're the one everyone else leans on while you're quietly spiraling at 2am, drafting texts you won't send. You're ambitious, self-aware, and tired of patterns you can't seem to break - in love, in dating, in how you show up for people who don't show up for you. If you're a woman or young adult navigating heartbreak, relationships, or the messy in-between, you're exactly who I work with.

I primarily use an integration of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Katie Smelko is passionate about the beauty that can come from broken places and wants to see you healthy in body, heart, and mind. She believes that all of these aspects contribute to you thriving. By co-creating a safe space for openness, processing, and healing, she will partner with you to identify questions and experiences that may be interfering with your sense of wholeness. She specializes in working with individuals who have experienced trauma, as well as those who deal with issues that are often linked with trauma experiences. These include substance use disorders, anxiety, depression, and personality disorders.

My primary goal as a therapist is to provide my clients with the tools to live productive lives. We all have a story to tell and a journey to take. The vital component of everyone’s journey is the paths they take and identifying their catalyst to achieve change. The driving force in my career path is the desire to reach members of society that have a misconception regarding counseling and increase their knowledge of the therapeutic process. Also, providing individuals with a voice and the courage to use it. Letting your voice be a positive reflection of who you are can trigger change.

If you're needing therapy and are sick to death of counselors who just nod and repeat back what you just said to them - I may be the therapist for you. My true passion lies in helping clients who feel that they don’t belong, who feel stuck or lonely in their current relationships, or who are struggling to create meaningful change in their lives. I am definitely not the therapist who sits in the chair silently nodding while you try to figure your own shit out. Good therapy helps because it gives you a structured, supportive space to unpack your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors with someone who 100% has your back (that's me!).

I also pull from family systems approaches, believing that our distressing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors make sense within the systems we live in.
Whether you’ve lost a loved one or feel you've lost yourself, you're struggling with the question of “why” or “why me," you're heartbroken or the one who did the breaking, I'm here to help. As a relational therapist, I believe relationships and connection are at the heart of healing and growth, and therefore prioritize our therapeutic relationship above all else. Our earliest sessions I focus heavily on building trust and a secure bond with you. From there, my work becomes a way of being with you, relating, validating, questioning, and challenging.

The person we listen to the most is ourselves and that is the person we will believe first. That is because this is who we spend the most time with, this is the person who speaks volumes when we are alone, and this is the person we will spend the rest of our lives with. This person is called SELF. We must learn how to be with our own self and care for ourselves properly. The way we treat others speaks to how we are treating ourselves. Allow me to help you care for you so that you will know how to care for others.

Many people are impacted by trauma—both “big T” traumas like major life events or abuse, and “little T” traumas such as ongoing stress or repeated emotional hurt—that continue to influence how they think, feel, and relate to others. You may feel stuck in patterns that no longer serve you, overwhelmed by emotional reactions, or disconnected from yourself or others. I treat PTSD by reprocessing traumatic memories with EMDR and Internal Family Systems therapies, as well as mindfulness practice.
I am most helpful working with adults who lack meaning or purpose in their lives, who feel a gap that they cannot fill; with those who sense time passing by and they are not fully engaged, living the life they could; often they don’t even know what that life looks like and even more often they feel alone.
I will approach you with a wide-open mind, with many questions and few answers. I don’t like to call this thing we do therapy, but work. Challenging work. Good work. It will help you figure out what you can change in your life and how, so that you find fulfillment in the present and enjoy Today. But only if you really want to.

Family Therapy Therapists
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
