My clients would describe me as competent, easy to talk to and compassionate. I am passionate about creating an environment where you can feel safe and heard. Carl Rogers once said, “We think we listen, but very rarely do we listen with real understanding, true empathy. Yet listening, of this very special kind, is one of the most potent forces for change that I know.” I believe that therapeutic work is most helpful when you can sense that you are working with a therapist who genuinely cares and will listen. From that foundation, there will also be space for you to reflect and receive insight that will aid in meeting your goals.

Trauma disrupts the whole person. It can leave you feeling detached from yourself and disconnected from those around you. With the extensive variety of symptoms trauma leaves in its wake, it’s also common for survivors to feel misunderstood by the rest of society. My goal is to create the space you need to begin feeling safe being you. My passion is for trauma survivors who desire to pursue a life of greater peace, genuineness, and fulfillment. I specialize in working with issues such as Complex PTSD, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and dissociative disorders, including Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Hi there! I'm Ashley. I'm a therapist in Texas offering individual counseling to adults and teens. I am passionate about providing trauma-informed, culturally competent mental health care to clients of all identities. I specialize in treating addiction, trauma, PTSD/complex PTSD, first responder trauma, and dissociative disorders. Often my clients feel stuck in their symptoms, which hold them back from enjoying comfort in their daily lives. These symptoms could include panic attacks, dissociative episodes, feeling disconnected from others, or waves of sadness, all of which can lead to unhealthy self-medication.

Deciding to go to therapy is not an easy thing to do. Women of color are often told to suck it up, get over it, and be strong. But sometimes, being strong means knowing when to ask for help. Being strong means admitting to ourselves that we can't do it all on our own, and that's okay. Oftentimes, we may not even be able to recognize all the difficult situations we've been through and all the challenges we have come up against. Traumatic experiences in childhood and/or adulthood that we have not had a chance to deal with may now be catching up to us.

Many of my clients have experienced a traumatic event(s) such as sexual, physical, or emotional abuse, or neglect. The last ones can be harder to define because invalidation is a common form of emotional neglect that is hard to label. Despite what the trauma is or if it falls into one of those categories exactly, if it affects you, then it matters. Clients come to me with confusion and emotional pain that I help them sift through and connect with in order to heal and return to their new normal version of life. I welcome all clients from all walks of life, races, cultures, genders, and preferences.

Reaching out can be difficult and a bit scary, but rest assured you are making the right choice and taking a huge step in the right direction. We will walk through this journey together.

I enjoy taking more of a holistic approach and getting to the root causes. Everything we do in life, from the people with whom we surround ourselves to the foods we consume, effects our mental health. Things from our past continue to have a significant impact on us as long as it remains undealt with and tucked away, but life does not have to be this way.

I have years of experience, training, and research in understanding the ways repeated trauma, doubt, and dissociation affect an individual at the core of their identity. My approach is an inquisitive and engaging attempt at identifying the symptoms that make it hard for individuals to connect with themselves.

I specialize in the treatment of trauma related and dissociative disorders. I have been in private practice since 2002. I completed my student and LPC internships with Timberlawn Psychiatric Hospital's Trauma Program, directed by Colin Ross, M.D. from November 1996 through February 1998. My intern work at the trauma program led me to a long-time association with Dr. Ross and a specialization in the treatment of trauma-related disorders including Dissociative Identity Disorder. I was the program director for the inpatient Trauma Treatment Program from 1998-2002.

Ideally, a client voluntarily comes to therapy seeking assistance resolving the struggles they experience which are interfering with their daily functioning. They are willing to participate in the therapeutic process (i.e. coming to sessions, participating in the discussions, completing assignments in between sessions, and practicing skills in between sessions). They are engaged and ready to start the work.

You took that first hard step toward change because here you are! Let's take the next steps together. Do you feel like things that have brought you safety and support aren't doing that anymore? Have the people or groups or communities that you've been a part of started to make you feel like you are unsafe? You shouldn't have to feel like this in your relationship. No one should have to feel afraid of the person they love. If you've had recent disruptions in your life, whether in your relationship or in your connection to places of support, I would love to help you regain stable footing.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
