It's getting harder and harder to make space for our own well-being in an age of fast-pace and high demands. Maybe you're right at the edge of what you can manage or feel completely underwater. Maybe your anxiety is through the roof, or you're struggling to get out of bed. Perhaps you don't like the way you're coping with life, or grief seems to have taken up a permanent residence in your life. Maybe you're all too familiar with the word "burnout," but you don't know what to do about it. Perhaps you feel like you should be better by now, or that old wound shouldn't still hurt, but it still hurts anyway.

Life is full of transitions and beautiful experiences. The constant and unpredictable changes can sometimes be difficult to navigate alone. It's during the most challenging times when we have exhausted ourselves, we succumb to feelings of isolation and hopelessness. Our emotions can lead to a detrimental cycle of negative self thoughts, anxiety , depression and so forth. I'm letting you know today, you have options and more importantly, support. While we cannot change our past, I am a firm believer we can learn and grow from it.

We can work together to tackle the anxiety , depression, and self-esteem issues you’re experiencing through techniques from CBT, humanistic, and person-centered approaches.
Noticing life seems overwhelming to navigate? Work, family, and other relationships pull you in so many directions it can seem unbearable at times. It can prove difficult to properly communicate how you feel while maintaining relationships with important people in your life. Worrying you could ruin relationships with others takes precedence. After getting emotionally overwrought, exhaustion kicks in and you don’t want to do anything.

It is not always easy to check in with ourselves. And when we do, the most common question is, “Is this a safe space?” As your therapist, I take pride in cultivating safe spaces to process whatever comes up for you. I enjoy working with African American Women and Men struggling with stress management, anxiety , mindfulness, and self-esteem challenges because these are areas that require intentionality, and as minor as they may seem, can have a major impact on how we navigate the world.

Nothing - or perhaps everything - is going right and there's an aching feeling inside that won't go away. Either way, you're feeling ashamed, powerless, overwhelmed, and not sure what to do next. I understand! Life is hard and sometimes it can be difficult to feel like you have a handle on it. Or maybe the moment you do, something else comes your way and you’re tired. Maybe you’ve never really felt like you’ve had a handle on it at all. You're not alone and I'm here to help.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
