My treatment approach focuses on the use of cognitive behavioral therapy within a psychodynamic and family systems framework.
Are you frustrated because you seem to be having the same unproductive conversations with your spouse, boss, or teenager? I specialize in helping couples and families achieve healthier relationships, better communication, and more effective coping skills. I also treat individual adults and adolescents struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, grief, and eating disorders. I have extensive experience in brief problem focused therapy as well as longer term, more intensive psychodynamic work. Many of my clients are high functioning, professional couples in stressful careers, who are trying to balance the demands of their profession with their individual needs and those of their family.

Coming to therapy requires courage, and I offer an empathic and supportive space where patients can feel understood, valued, and accepted as they are. I approach therapy through an important lens: that lasting change and healing comes from understanding the present-day impact of one’s past experiences and relationships, most importantly with oneself. Whether you are hoping to better manage stress and anxiety, navigate a challenging time in your life, strengthen your relationships, let go of feelings of insecurity, or improve your overall wellbeing, I can help.

Is your stress level through the roof? Do you feel exhausted, but yet you can’t sleep? Overwhelmed with worry or frustration? Are your relationships on edge? Or do you feel "stuck"? It's easy to lose your focus, your joy and your presence when you are inundated with stress and overwhelming emotion. I work with clients wanting to move beyond emotional pain from their past. By doing this, we improve relationships, increase self-esteem, and build resilience.

I really don't have an ideal client. However, I prefer to work with people who are motivated to address their issues. I have experience in working with depression and anxiety. Issues of crisis intervention, post-traumatic stress, veterans concerns, and sexual abuse are all part of my skill set. Most people need support and compassion. The presenting problem may be related to other issues. Family of origin circumstances are frequently an issue. I work in conjunction with the client to develop a treatment plan. We devise goals and define what they hope to accomplish.

Relationships are hard. Only our closest loved ones, especially those we share a bed with, can stir up our most intense feelings of emotional pain, disappointment and shame. We often respond to these emotions with anger, withdraw, control or resistance which leads to conflict, emotional distance and the dreaded dead bedroom syndrome. Having disagreements in a relationship is expected. We all have our own ways of seeing, feeling and thinking about things including sex. The key to a healthy relationship is to be able to acknowledge the differences and communicate in a way that is genuine, supportive and understanding.

We also treat anxiety disorders like OCD, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety, as well as sleep disorders. Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
