I worked in education for over twenty-seven years before finishing my licensing, working with teens, adults, and families.
Facing difficulties should not be done alone. We are stronger than we think we are, but we are also stronger together. A therapist should make you feel comfortable, safe, and secure. This is always my goal. You are my priority.

I work with adults, teens, and women who may feel overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected, and are ready for deeper healing.
In our first session, we’ll focus on getting to know you and what brings you to therapy. You’ll have space to share your concerns, experiences, and what you’re hoping for, at a pace that feels comfortable for you. There’s no pressure to open up about everything right away.

I offer in-office appointments, telehealth or online appointments, EMDR, Equine-Assisted Therapy (Counseling using Horses), Animal-Assisted Thearpy (trained therapy dog or barn cats), and Play Therapy or a Game Room for older children and teens.
Many times we find ourselves in emotional crisis that we can't get through alone. All people go through hard times in life. Some people get through it alone or with support from family or friends, others pretend to get through it and live with it constantly affecting their lives, and others are not able to get through it or pretend to. There is no right or wrong way to overcome hard times, trauma, anger, bereavement, grief, depression, addiction, or other obstacles in life. If you find yourself in a hard spot and in need of someone to listen and help guide you through it, with no judgement, I would like to be that person for you.

Finding answers to many of life's problems is difficult. I have found that for some, it is difficult because they are asking the wrong questions. Answering the question, "Why?" can be helpful, sometimes in figuring out how a troubling situation occurred. Why something happens, however, does not always give a clear direction towards solving a problem. "How?" something happened and "What?" can be done to promote positive change can be much more useful in resolving an otherwise troubling situation.

Are you feeling stuck in anxiety, low mood, or a season of life that no longer fits who you are becoming? Maybe you are navigating depression, grief, or a major life transition and finding that your usual coping skills are no longer enough. Many adults and families reach a point where stress, mood changes, or emotional pain begin to interfere with relationships, work, or daily functioning. If you are seeking clarity, stability, or a sense of direction, you are not alone. Therapy can be a space to slow down, make sense of what you are experiencing, and reconnect with your strengths. I find joy in the journey of self discovery.

I have 13 years experience working with adults and adolescents.
I support individuals navigating deep loss and those struggling with unmanaged sexual compulsions that feel overwhelming or out of control. You may be grieving the death of someone you love, including the loss of an infant or child, or living with the quiet ache of anticipatory grief during serious illness. Or you may feel caught in cycles of shame, secrecy, or disconnection around sexual compulsions. Whatever brings you here, you are not alone. I offer a compassionate, nonjudgmental space to process, resolve, and move toward hope, connection, and lasting change.

My ideal client is someone who feels stuck, overwhelmed, or weighed down by patterns they do not fully understand. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship conflicts, addiction, or major life stress. Many of the people I work with feel like they are carrying a lot internally and want a safe place where they can finally talk openly without fear of judgment.

Dr. Wanda R. W. McKinley
Licensed Professional Counselor, MS, BS, LPC, CHT
Serves Area
I am a Survivor of domestic violence. My name is Dr. Wanda R.W. McKinley, and I went through over 22 consecutive years of abuse. When we go through traumatic experiences in our lives, we sometimes find it hard to express our feelings and thoughts to others. Those trapped emotions eventually find their way to the surface and causes us to react in negative ways. Being a Survivor I understand the importance of being able to express yourself even if it is not verbally. I want to help individuals transition from abusive situations to being self-sufficient in society. The vision is to empower men and women so they can and will survive.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
